Chapter 3 ~ Ugh... Newbies

We're all at HQ and peering over Baileys shoulder at Chantelle's file.

"Red hair, tan skin, bad news. Is this really all we have!?"

I reached over and clicked refresh 1 000 times and nothing happened. We all glanced at each other, we all knew the same thing. We'd have to find out everything the FBI hadn't.

"Hey guys! How's everything going?"

We all turned to face my Dad. I motioned to the empty file that stared back at us.

"Oh... Well at least you will have some fun on the field right?"

We all groaned. Dad laughed.

"Ok well I have someone I want you to meet. Everyone this is Kye! He's learned the basics and is ready to take on a few other obstacles. He finished his Criminal Law studies a month ago. He's just like you Seth!"

They fist pumped. I rolled my eyes, Piper and I glanced at each other as if to say "boys"!

"Kye this is my daughter Ashley, her boyfriend Bailey, her best friend Piper and her boyfriend Seth!"

"Ahh the famous Ashley! Your father has told me a lot about you!"

I met his gaze. If you haven't already figured, I'm somewhat competitive and need to know a lot about someone to become friends.

"Funny! He didn't mention you..."

I heard Bailey snicker but cover it with a cough. He turned to face me his back to Dad and gave me this sign 👌 then went to stand next to Seth. I bobbed my head in a way to say "thanks".

"Um... Ash can I talk to you for a second?"

I nodded and held up a finger just to say "one moment". I turned to face the others and whispered to them.

"Print out Chantelle's file and Kye's file, and meet me in the car in 5! We'll grab two cars, Bailey's and Pipers. I'll go with Bailey and you two will go together. You two can go off and ID Chantelle and we'll find out EVERYTHING we need to know about Kye! We'll meet back at the house at 3pm with a new and finished file! Bye guys."

I waved off Piper and Seth and told Bailey to wait for me in the car and I'll be right back. I walked over to Dad with a fake smile at Kye and sat down at Dad's desk.

"Look, I know how you are with newbies!"

I nodded, not really paying attention.

"He knows about your past."

That made me sit up straighter. Bolt up right in fact. I widened my eyes.

"WHAT! HOW? Who told him! They had no right! I'm sorry but I have to do a background check now!"

"No need for that, he's been in the industry for a while now. Ever since it happened."

"So he knows about mum?"

Dad lowered his head.

"Yes..."

"Ok then well, I need to get started."

I got up and walked out.

"This conversation isn't finished yet!"

Dad called after me. I waved a dismissive hand as I slammed the door behind me. Bailey was waiting for me as he talked to Kye. Oh no. He's giving Kye The Eye! I needed to break them up.

"Hey hon! I told you to wait in the car."

He pulled me close and put his arm around me.

"I just thought I'd walk you to the car instead!"

"Oh what a gentleman! Isn't he sweet?"

I asked Kye rhetorically. He pecked me on the cheek. I turned my head and kissed him on the lips. I put my hands on jaw line and deepened the kiss. I opened one eye and peeked at Kye. He'd turned and walked off. I pulled away and gestured to Kye. Bailey put his hand up to high five me and I met his hand. We walked back to the car hand in hand.

We both knew what he wanted to tell Kye:

To know where he stands!
