Benjamin

"Come on, Melody, we still have to check on your project," I say, leaning on the doorway of her room. Melody's project for this year science fair is a glow in the dark room. She made a human-sized box and filled it with glow in the dark flowers. It took a week to create the project and she hopes that she could win the award of the best project.  Melody might be a 9 years old girl, but her attitude is older than that. She's a perfectionist, with almost everything, even her blue dress.

"Can you help me with my ribbon, please?" Melody turns to me, showing me the matching blue ribbon.

I walk closer to her, clamping the ribbon on her hair and we both look at the mirror.

"There you go, Princess," I say staring at her eyes in the mirror. "You look cute."

"Thank you, Bennie," Melody turns to give me a soft hug.

Melody and I have some kind of bonding that we don't have with another family member. When she was born, I remember how small she was in my arms. Our mother died giving birth to her and I took care of Melody ever since. I was like a mother to her and she was like a daughter to me. We're in the level where we don't have to speak to express something, we just have to look at each other's eyes and all words flew by itself.

"Now, let's go," I say, pinning the strand of her hair behind her ear. "Don't forget your coat."

The science fair is located on the basketball court. The school always hold up the fair every year before and for those who win the best project will get prices like a trophy, fresh money and else.

"Your box is great," I say after checking Melody's glow in the dark box. "I think we're open for business."

Since I'm not allowed to help her look after the box, I walk myself to the bleacher, sitting there while keeping an eye on her. I pull my phone from my coat, trying to make a contact with Charlie again. I already called her this morning, she said she wanted to go and she didn't want me to pick her up. I type her name on my phone, finding her number then I call it. There's a couple of rings before she picks up.

"Hey, Charlie, where are you?" I say, rubbing the back of my neck.

"I'm already here, I just need to find the basketball court,"

"Where are you?" I ask, standing up.

"I'm in the C building?"  She sounds unsure.

"Wait there. I'm coming over."

Charlie is lost for sure. C building is where all the classes are and the basketball court located behind it. I jog myself to find her in C building and when I make a turn to the left, I see her leaning over the locker.

"Charlie," I say, catching my breath as I stop not far from her.

"Benjamin," Charlie turns on my direction, approaching me and giving me a friendly hug. "I hope this is not too much for a science fair awarding."
