It sure was fun watching her walk away. The others around who witnessed the scene were overcome with smiles and mad laughter. I resume picking up my scattered binders and folders when, out of the corner of my eye, I notice some guy wasting his time by taking a knee to help me.
"What are you doing?"
"I figured you might want some help," says one of sexiest voices I've ever heard. I try to stand my ground, but I'm just so tempted to see if his looks match his voice.
Yep.
His eyes are a crystal blue; unlike mine which are almost grey. His sandy blonde-brunette hair was thick and curled somewhat. He realizes I was checking him out and he smiles. I could tell he found my embarrassment amusing because he started to chuckle.
"I appreciate your help, but I don't need it... I've got-"
"Don't want to be late during your first week of school," he cut in. I managed to exhale a weak, "Alright," before he picked up my poetry book.
"Shakespeare, huh?"
I smile, partly out of fear and the other part out of listening to his voice. I'm sorry, but I don't think I'm ever going to get over the sound of that.
"I'm kind of a nerd for poetry myself," he says with a shrug.
I take one more look at him. He's wearing one of those jackets that you would see the football team wear in a typical 90's movie; letterman jacket, that's what it's called, and he has his collar up trying to hide what looked like a hickey. Obviously a total douchebag.
I was wrong... so over it.
"Yeah, okay. Let me guess, you're captain of the football team, you're not a total player, and you just happen to like poetry?"
I roll my eyes as he puts a hand over his heart.
"Ouch," he whispers. "So what do I call you?"
"You don't."
He laughs at the tone of my voice and I give him the same look I had given Bry. Pure, disgust.
"Well, I'm Trevor. My friends call me Tre, but you can call me whatever you'd like."
"How about jerk-off? Oh, I know! Asshole... You should go now," I snap, standing up. My attempt to get rid of him only further amused him.
This is going to be a long year.
I stand up and take my book from him, then turn around and start walking.
As I walked away I could feel him staring at me; it was like I had a target on my back and he was throwing darts at it.
Yeah, my back, because that's what he was staring at.
Mr.Peter was my chemistry teacher, as if Tre wasn't enough to annoy me. Nothing says fun like a monotone talking about safety for an hour.
Am I being sarcastic? Absolutely.
Nothing else too dramatic happened until I walked into my third block class. Mr. Gray who was Mr.Gay to everyone else, makes a hobby out of acknowledging me for my love of literature.
"Ah, a poet! Wonderful Ms.Rose!"
Why does his feminine voice have to be so loud?
Here's what that announcement got me: lots of looks and lots of giggles.
"Yeah," I sigh as I rush to the seat in the back left corner of the room. It's rare for anyone to pay any attention to me while I'm back there. I keep my head down but my eyes on the door. Then I hear an all too familiar voice.
Trevor.
As soon as he stepped through the door he sought me out. I quickly look down at the tiles on the floor, once again praying for the power of invisibility.
Prayers denied.
He smiles and heads straight for the vacant seat next to me.
"I hope you don't mind company."
"I do mind, actually. I would prefer if yo-"
Before I can urge him to leave me alone, Mr.Gray tells everyone to take a seat. So wonderboy did just that.
Why me? Dear God, why me?
As the instructor tries refreshing our memories with English lessons we've already learned, Trevor tries refreshing his love life, by flirting with me.
"You know, you're like a snake; vicious and doesn't hesitate to sink it's fangs in you," he says in my ear.
"And you're a pig! Dirty, disgusting and I want nothing to do with you!" I reply harshly.
"And she injects the venom…"
Is he seriously trying to be funny? What the hell? He is not good at handling rejection.
"The only thing that's funny about you is the fact you think you have a chance with me!"
I must've spoke too loudly because Mr.Gray called me out.
"Emaline, would you like to share with the class what you and Trevor are talking about?"
I look at Trevor and he shrugs.
"It's nothing really," he says in hopes of rescuing me and satisfying the teacher.
He failed.
"No, really I insist. If it's important enough to disrupt my class I should hear it."
He crosses his arms and waits impatiently for an excuse from either of us, and it might as well be me.
"If you must know, I was using a metaphor to tell Trevor that he's a pig. But, like a child he can't handle rejection."
I should try to get a job as a stand up comedian because that line scored a wave of laughter. Luckily for me, Mr.Gray just shook his head, saving Trevor from further embarrassment and saving me from further flirting. The rest of class was great, until it ended...
