ROMAN...

Monday mornings were always hectic for me. Tons of meetings to attend, loads of documents to go through and either approve or decline them and employees to supervise.

"Good morning Mr. Jones," my assistant, Murphy greeted me, handing me a cup of my regular hot espresso coffee as soon as I walked through the company doors. I nodded in response and took the cup from him sipping its contents.

"Your dad is waiting for you in your office," Murphy continued. I stopped walking and looked back at Murphy.

"Mr. Bennett?" I asked in surprise. My father had never set a foot at the office ever since he retired and hearing from my assistant that he was around shocked me beyond.

"Yes sir," Murphy replied nodding his head.

I continued sipping my coffee while walking to my office. Murphy followed reminding me of the various meetings I had planned for the day and the times they were to take place.

When I got to my office, I saw my dad seated on the couch just opposite my desk with a frown covering his face. I entered and shut the door in front of Murphy leaving him outside still talking.

"Hey dad, what a big surprise," I said to my dad hugging him.

"I see you have everything under control here," he replied looking at me with pride.

I was my father's youngest and only son. He had two children, me and my older sister Anna. Anna had decided to spend her life travelling around the world helping children in need. She worked for an international non profit organization and was always travelling. She rarely came home for holidays due to her busy schedule. In the start my father was not happy with her career decision because he wanted her to join the company business but with time he learned to accept her choices and support her.

"Yes I do," I spoke pulling the chair behind me so that I could sit close to him.

"Is everything okay?" I finally asked after settling down.

He stood up from his seat and walked to the large glass door that led to the balcony where he looked outside at the city in silence as if looking for the right words to use.

"It's about the hotel in Vernon," he finally spoke.

"Is everything okay? Do you need me to manage it too,"

"Well your mother got a loan from a loans company to construct it and I have been paying the money in installments for the past five years and yesterday I received an email from the company saying the deadline to service the loan is the 12th of next month,"

"Okay......well how much do we owe them?"

"Forty million US dollars," he said with an exasperated sigh.

Forty million!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I stood up from my seat immediately after hearing the sum of money. Yes our company was doing okay but not that okay to release forty million US dollars within one month.

"Dad, forty million is a lot of money and the 12th is a month away. We do not have such an amount of money to release at the moment. We just bought the land in Brookline and we are in the process of renovating the hotel in Hawley. There is no money left to spare," I replied, frustration evident in my voice.

"Son, don't worry. I just need a couple of days to figure out what to do,"

"Maybe we should get a loan from the bank. I can talk to the accounting department to arrange meetings with several banks immediately,"

"No we can not do that now. We will be increasing our debt burden. I need to come up with a permanent solution to this situation. Me and Nelson are working effortlessly to solve this problem,"

This was just too much to process at the moment that I forgot to ask what we would loose if we didn't clear the loan by the deadline.

"The hotel...We would loose the hotel in Vernon," my dad replied sadly.

The hotel in Vernon was our biggest hotel and it brought in the most capital. It was a physical representation of my mother's hard work. She had spent her lifetime building that hotel and making it as successful as it was now. After her death, my dad had made it his new life goal to continue her legacy with the hotel. He retired from the company and spent all his efforts and time at the hotel. Loosing it to the loan's company would be his death.

"Can I go to the loan's company and talk to them to push our deadline till we are able to come up with money,"

My dad remained silent for a couple of minutes looking out at the balcony before finally saying, "By the end of tomorrow, if I have no solution then you can do that but for now leave it to me. I think I just got an idea," and he grabbed his briefcase and left.
