I wake up with my eyes wide with realization. I'd nearly forgotten something very, very important. How could I have even dared to miss this?
It was the second to last day in the month of December— December 30th. Today was V's birthday, and I hadn't even thought of a gift to give him.
Mind frantic with panic, I check to see if he's sound asleep. He's absolutely out cold on the chair— which was why you had to get your eight hours of sleep every single night.
Making as less noise as I possibly could, I slide out of the bed and throw on a fleece jacket over my shoulders. Not even bothering to brush my tangled hair, I rush out of the front door with my wallet tucked in the back pocket of my coat.
When I'm out of the Apartments, I quickly think about his favorite things. From what I'd seen, he seemed to like games— kudos to Jungkook— but I couldn't just get him a PlayStation or an Xbox for his birthday. That would be meaningless, and I wanted to get something that went deeper than a game console.
A bowl of japchae? But that was just stupid— no way I was getting him that.
Clothes? Nope— too boring.
Scrapbook? But he'd definitely notice by the time I'd finish, and that would ruin the whole point of a surprise present.
Did he like puppies?
I could get him a puppy. Or a dog. V loved animals— and I'd seen that for myself when he'd fed his favorite snack to a starving cat. He'd suggested that we adopt the poor creature, but in the moment that he'd looked away, the cat had disappeared.
A smile slowly grows on my face as I slowly change my direction to the local pet shop. He would absolutely adore the gift, and it could totally make up for the fact that I'd disappeared without telling him.
Perfect.
When I arrive at the store, I hear the pets before I see them. The sound of various animals— ranging from a typical bark to an exotic tweet, seems like an odd symphony to my ears as I examine each and every pet curiously.
Some of them were already winning me over, and I had to stay focused on what V would like. This was his present. Not mine.
"Miss, how can I help you?"
The sudden feminine voice breaks me out from my intense eye contact with a parakeet, and I almost trip over my own words as I reply back.
"Hi! Um, good morning. Do you have a puppy— a really cute one? I'd prefer one that likes to cuddle."
Amusement flickers in the woman's eyes as she nods her head, leading me to rows and rows of cages set out in a perfect line against the side of the store. Each one houses a different specimen of puppy, every one of them so adorable that I nearly cry tears of joy.
This had definitely been the right way to go.
"This one is a Teacup Pomeranian— a very cute specimen. He has a very bouncy personality— would spend all his day cuddling if he could."
The second I look at the tiny ball of white and black fluff in the cage, I know that it's the right one.
"How much?"
