We sleep with the lights on,

Eyes open and the shades drawn,

Just to keep the dark out.

People watch from our front lawn,

We hear their voices carry on and on

And watch to make sure they stay

Awake where the shadows can't bleed them.

The time flies, but we aren't having fun

Looking on as the sun sets and the light runs.

Seconds turn to minutes and hours to days,

The watches keep the time until they tick out and die,

But we still sleep with the lights on,

With eyes open and shades drawn

Because people watch from our front lawn

And it's easier to hide than it is to run.

Believe me, people are no fun.

Our inside voices keep the nightmares away.

Maybe we care

Just a little too much,

Which is why we sleep with the lights on

Eyes open and shades drawn

And let everyone else

Carry on and on

Without their lights on.
