For the next few days, Camella spent as much time as possible alone. Her mother's lawyer, Jane Hargreeves, took care of most of the situation. Camella just went along with whatever Ms. Hargreeves said and didn't talk to anybody else.
The funeral was a couple of days after her death. Camella couldn't stand being there, even though it was required. She sat by blankly as people offered their condolences.
Apparently, Laura Taylor had written a will. The will stated that all of her money and belongings would be passed down to her only living daughter, Camella Taylor, and that she was to be put in the care of Tony Stark, her designated guardian, who would overlook the care of the money and possessions until Camella turned 18, when she would be able to do whatever she wanted with it.
Camella didn't understand why she was put in the hands of Tony Stark. Her mom only worked for him, it wasn't like they knew each other personally.
While everything in the house was being packed away, Camella decided to pay Tony Stark a visit.
Camella
I found Tony sitting at a table in one of the lounge rooms, looking at a small picture. He had a faint smile on his face, like he was remembering something happy.
He looked up, sensing my presence. "Hey."
"Hey." I walked over and sat down beside him.
He stayed quiet for a moment before saying, "Your mother was an incredible person."
He rubbed his thumb over the photo. "No matter what happened, she managed to put on a smile. She would do it to make someone else feel good, even if she was feeling crappy. She was always up to help someone. Didn't matter what she was doing, she'd stop and help." He sighed softly. "I admired that about her."
He passed me the photo. I took it and saw that it was a picture of my mom when she was pregnant with me, Tony sitting beside her, both of them looking happy as ever.
"Your mom and I were friends. That's why she took the job working for me. I offered it to her. That's also why I'm your guardian."
He looked at me, searching my face carefully with his eyes. "I see so much of her in you. She was one of my best friends, which is the reason I offered you the 'internship' in the first place. But then I realized that you have many of your own qualities that make you special. Your ability for talking sarcastically, for example," he chuckled. "Your mom was horrible at it."
"I just want you to know that, despite how I act, I do care. I cared about your mother. Tremendously. And now I care about you."
Surprised at his willingness to talk about his affections for me, I look up at him. "I'm guessing that's not something you tell people very often."
He pursed his lips. "I wanted to tell you that because I don't want you to feel like I don't want to be taking care of you while you here." He patted my shoulder lightly.
I leaned in and hugged him, something he wasn't expecting because it took him a few seconds to hug back.
"Thanks, Tony," I whispered hoarsely.
He smiled into my hair. "No problem, kiddo."
He pulled away. "Now, tomorrow, I'll get you all settled into your new room and have anything you don't need put into a storage facility."
I nodded and stood up, ready to go back to the house to see how things were going. "See you tomorrow."
He smiled. "See you."
I walked to the door but turned back around before exiting. "Wait a minute."
Tony looked back up at me. "Yeah?"
"If you knew my mom since before I was born, how come I've never met you until now?"
He looked at me mysteriously. "Somethings are meant to be waited for, Camella."
Seeming satisfied with himself, he walked in the other direction towards the other door.
I left the building, heading back home.
Somethings are meant to be waited for.
I guess it can be comforting knowing that there will be things worth waiting for, but not if you're expecting those things to be bad. I've had my fair share of bad things happen to me, but chances are, they're not over. I am a superhero, after all. Who's to say I'm not done suffering?
There'll also be good things, though. Maybe they'll be enough to make the bad things seem not so bad, maybe they won't.
We'll just have to wait and see, won't we?
