CHAPTER 15: talk about a sad past life

"Owen, can I talk to you for a second?" I asked as I peeked into the common room where Owen was in along with some other men. They all looked up at me and I gulped. Even after I've been treated like family by everyone, I still felt intimidated every time I was in their presence.
"Can it wait? I'm almost done," he spoke calmly as the other men in the room began to whisper between themselves. They were soon silenced though when Owen turned to glare at them, "I'll only be a few minutes."
"Oh, okay, I'll just wait for you outside," I spoke, fiddling with my fingers before leaving the room, closing the door as I left. It was a scorching hot day and I definitely didn't want to get burnt so I went to a nearby cafe, just a few metres from the hall and settled at an outdoor table with a big umbrella above me.
"Hola, do you want to anything to eat?" I looked up to see a middle-aged woman with a notepad and pencil in her hands as she smiled at me. Hmm, I am quite hungry—wait, what the fuck? No, I'm supposed to focus here. I shook my head at the woman, returning a kind smile to her.
"No thanks, I'm just waiting for someone," I said as she nodded, heading off to do other orders when a voice stopped her in her tracks.
"Maria, do you mind fetching two glasses of water for us? It's a hot day and I don't want the lady to suffer from heat stroke." I quickly spun around in my chair in surprise as I saw Owen stood there, clearly hot from the weather. The woman, also known as Maria, nodded before giving Owen a small curtsy and a smirk appearing on her face.
"Are you going to 'forget' to pay me again?" she asked as she glared playfully at Owen, who shrugged and smirked.
"I have no idea what you're talking about, señora," he said, his Spanish coming through like silk. Maria only laughs slightly before shaking her head at him, "I'm sure my idiot of a brother didn't mean to not pay you after we dashed off in a hurry. Here, you can have double for what we had last time."
"Oh no, I couldn't possibly. That's your money. Don't you need it?" she asked, her hands up in surrender.
"Not really. I feel as if you're going to benefit from it more." he forces the money upon her as she smiles from ear to ear, placing a small kiss on Owen's forehead before quickly walking inside, a slight waddle in her walk.
Very soon, Owen joins me at the table, which wobbled slightly at the uneven ground levels. Even my chair wobbled slightly, but Owen seemed to cope just fine. Well, obviously. It's not like these seats are such a big deal anyway.
"Sorry to interrupt your meeting. It must've been important," I said quietly as he only ran a hand over his face, groaning in frustration.
"No, it's fine, just shit coming out of Malcolm's mouth. Nothing new." I could tell he was annoyed by how things were going. I knew the reputation Malcolm had and to be honest, I feel quite sorry for him. After all, imagine being hated by a King and all his men. Ouch.
"It can't have been that bad." he scoffs before throwing his hands in the air.
"No, it's worse. This is the shit I have to deal with nearly every day. That's at least an hour of my life I'll never get back." Maria soon comes with our water and I mutter a thank you as she smiles and bows. Wow, Owen may not be a real king, but he sure does know how to get people to bow down to him.
We sat there in silence for a while, watching the children play in the sun before their mothers gather them in and scold them for not wearing any suncream.
