I walked back into my room where Brielle was. She sat on the bed, wiping her cheeks every few seconds as she whimpered. I watched as another tear ran down her cheek and slowly, she averted her gaze to me. Her lip quivered as I settled next to her and wound my arm around her shoulders.
"I-It's all my fault," she whispered as she shook against me again. I shook my head quickly, pulling her back to look down at her. The look on her face broke my heart as some more tears ran down her cheeks. Using my thumbs, I wiped them away before my brows furrowed together, "my mom's gone, Owen. I don't know where she is and I just want her back. I need her."
"I know, doll. I know. We'll get her back and I promise you we will. Don't cry, okay?" I placed a soft kiss upon her lips before pressing one on each cheek, her nose and her forehead. She hiccuped, sniffling slightly as I brought her closer to me, "you know I don't like seeing you like this. I never did."
She sighed in my hold before physically relaxing, her body less tense as she placed her arms around me as well. I just stared contently at the wall in front of me as she pulled my duvet over us. She removed her face from my chest and placed her chin upon my shoulder.
"I remember when we were fifteen or sixteen, you always had my back. You were always there for me when I was sad and when you changed, I couldn't help but think I had lost you, but I wasn't going to let that stop me from being supportive." her voice was quiet, barely above a whisper as she played with a few strands of my hair at the back.
"People change, but that doesn't excuse me for everything I've done to you. I'll make it up to you in any way I could until you're satisfied," I told her with a small smile on my face. I lost her once as my best friend and I'm definitely not going to lose her again.
"I'll hold you to that," she said before silence overtook us. It was a comfortable silence like a soft blanket that could make anyone sleep away their worries. I felt her sigh again before she spoke up, "do you think my mom is alright? She must be, right? She said she would never leave me alone in this world ever. She promised me."
"Of course, she is. She's a tough woman so I highly doubt she's in any danger. Liam just wants a reaction out of you so don't worry. We'll find her soon enough." it's already been two days since that call. We had one more day and even if I knew it could be some dumb joke, I'm not taking chances. Not when Brielle's mother is in danger, "you should sleep, though. It's been a long day and it would do you some good to get some rest."
Brielle simply nodded before I felt her still in my arms, sleep overtaking her completely. I stroked her head gently as she sighed under my touch. We'll stay like this for a few hours and then I need to start looking through the rest of those papers for her. Wouldn't want her worrying her ass off again. Plus, I still really need that shower because not going to lie, I smell terrible.
