CHAPTER 66: broke my heart like it was easy

Ever since I made it back onto the cheer squad, I've been so busy with practice and other things as well. I still wasn't used to it, often pinching myself at the new reality of things. As much as I was upset about my breakup, I'm doing well so far and sometimes, it was just nice to step back from situations and carry on with life.
Owen was still in my head a lot and I thought about how he was doing, but I assumed he was better off without me. After what he said, I really couldn't stick around to stress him out even more. Sometimes, there's that awkward moment when I see him coming out of his house in those trousers and that leather jacket of his. We don't look at each other, but we know we've seen one another.
I had lined up outside one of the science labs that afternoon with my notes in my arms. At lunch, I got changed into my cheer uniform due to practice after school. Coco was next to me, leaned up against the wall and frantically checking her revision flashcards. I stared in amusement as Michael walked up to us calmly with a smile and as my gaze flickered to Coco, I could see her eyes glimmer in excitement.
"Well, look what we have here," he chimed in, joining us in the line as we waited to be told to go in. Usually, we weren't allowed in the labs by ourselves due to chemicals in the room so we always waited for our teacher. Either way, the classroom is locked shut after every lesson so getting in was impossible because only the top windows in the room opened and no one could reach them anyway, "ready for the test?"
"No!" Coco exclaimed, turning a flashcard over in her hand and groaning in frustration. Her frustration was getting worst when she continued her late studying. I looked around at the other students and the realisation soon kicked in that Owen was no where to be found. He never skipped an exam so this was certainly weird, but I understood why he would skip. After all, he's sat next to me and that would be awkward.
"Might need to hurry that up. Sir's coming now," Michael said, his voice low as he turned behind him. I followed his gaze and saw our teacher in the distance, talking to one of the teachers until they end up leaving to go up the stairs. That was when the doors behind me opened to see Owen come in with his brother. He held a folder under his arm as his brother went to his own lesson.
I couldn't help but feel my heartbeat quicken at the sight of him, this time wearing his full uniform including the blazer. He didn't look like a gang leader and instead seemed like a regular student at the school with a normal and boring life.
My mind would go back to the times I see him in the mornings whether he came to my house to pick me up or he waited for me at school. I would remember when a smile lit up on my face when I saw him, my stomach fluttering like some fool. He would mirror that smile, reaching out to have me in his arms. I was so used to it, my arms usually came out to hug him back because he was always there, but then I remember we aren't even dating anymore.
