it only takes a moment for jungguk to find the perfect painting even though the room contains dozens. it’s one of the few in the space that doesn’t depict a sunset, instead, it’s a scenic piece. it’s simple, yet the hand that painted it used immaculate precision to detail each plant, each cloud. it almost looks like a photograph, if it weren’t for the exaggerated brush lines it would pass as one. taehyung notices that jungguk has stopped and saunters over to stand at his side, halting his movement with a slight bounce.

“that’s where i grew up. i lived on a farm with my family for a while before my parents relocated us to the city. this one’s my most recent. i was feeling reminiscent last week and thought i’d try to paint home. it’s nowhere near as beautiful as the real thing, but i think i did a decent job at least.”

“it’s beautiful, tae.” jungguk smiles, his eyes still scanning the painting.

“well, if you like it so much then it’s yours.” joy fills taehyung’s body. he’s glad that the younger loves his work as much as he does.

“how much do you want for it?” jungguk turns to taehyung, prepared to pay any price to own the piece.

“nothing, just take it.” jungguk goes to argue but taehyung cuts him off, not wanting to hear any of his protests. “think of it as a gift.”

“tae, that’s really nice and all but-”

“hush, now.” taehyung steps forward and picks the canvas up off the wooden floor, beckoning for jungguk to follow as he leaves the room. “you should probably ask someone to come over so that you don’t have to walk this home. i would drive you back but my car is in the shop.”

that’s fine,” the younger speaks as he pulls out his phone, shooting a text to namjoon, “my friend had a short day at work and he wants to meet you anyway.”

the pair enter the living room where jin is still seated, playing on his phone while some cooking show plays on the tv. the man looks up upon their arrival, his eyes flitting to the painting in taehyung’s clutches.

“which one is that?” jin is usually the first to see taehyung’s painting, so he’s surprised that he’s never seen the piece that his roommate holds up for him to see. he raises his eyebrow in question.

“it’s the new one.” jin grows even more confused at this statement.

“you told me it wasn’t done.”

“yeah, well, i lied.” taehyung receives a pointed look, jin being displeased by his attitude, and shrinks back. he mumbles out an apology before sitting down next to jin, who now displays a pleased smile. “ggukie’s leaving in a little bit so i can run out to the store if you want me to.”

“you don’t have to, i asked jimin if he could make a stop on his way home.” taehyung nods to show that he heard the older before looking up at jungguk. the boy hasn’t moved from where he was before, standing in the middle of the room, his posture awkward.

“you can sit down, ggukie. we don’t bite.” taehyung glances at jin, “well, i don’t at least.” jin yells out at the statement, reaching over to hit the back of taehyung’s head. “ow! you just proved my point!”

“you deserved it, you brat. jungguk here seems like a sweetheart, i’d never hit him.” jin turns to the youngest of the three, sweetening his tone. “don’t mind him. take a seat, make yourself at home.”

jungguk laughs and sits beside taehyung. the long-haired man slouches back into the cushions of the couch, pouting, though his expression lights up soon after as the boy to his left pokes his cheeks. he grabs jungguk’s wrist before extending his free hand to poke his nose, bursting out in amusement when the younger scrunches his face up. he does the same thing a second time, laughing harder when jungguk swats at his hand this time.
