Edward, Bella, and Vanessa were standing over a large painting that held a group of sophisticated people standing on a balcony with many people in a rage of chaos. Vanessa hated the Volturi, once having been dragged in because of what she was and how she was turned. She rolled her eyes, stuffing her hands in her pockets of the dress she was wearing while Edward looked over Bella and showed her the painting that Carlisle made for his children to know exactly what the Volturi are and what they do.
"The Volturi are a very old, very powerful family. I guess they're the closest thing to royalty my world has." Edward told Bella while she looked over one face and furrowed her eyebrows.
"Is that Carlisle?" Bella asked and Vanessa nods her head.
"Yep, Carlisle as done a lot in his past lives." She told the human girl.
"Yeah. He lived with them for a few decades. Described them as very refined. No respect for human life, of course, but a respect for the arts and the sciences, at least. And the law. Above all, the law." Edward told her as Bella kept her eyes on the painting.
"Vampires have laws?" Bella asked, taking the time to ask all her questions.
"Well, if we didn't then a lot of people would know about us." Vanessa said, picking at her nails.
"Not very many. And only one that's regularly enforced." Edward stated.
"What is it?" Bella asked and Vanessa turned to face her.
"That we keep the existence of our kind a secret." She stated, Bella frowning.
"We don't make spectacles of ourselves, and we don't kill conspicuously. Unless, of course, you want to die." Edward stated while Vanessa looked over him in worry.
"You gotta stop talking about that. I can't even think about someone hurting you." Bella told the man.
"Bella, the only thing that can hurt me is you and Vanessa. And I don't have anything else to be afraid of." Edward told him while Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"So not true." She muttered, remembering Victoria.
"Victoria? She'll come for me one day. Alice will see when she decides, and we'll be ready." Edward said while Bella has a great idea.
"I could protect you if you change me." She told him while Vanessa shook her head.
