Cody had made his descision. He was going to explore the "[REDACTED] Lab." He waved a small goodbye to Seb, who was going home to grab a snack.
Cody stared ahead at the barren desert, knowing he would have to drive past at least 2 army bases worth of space. Fun. Suddenly, he was off, not letting himself change his mind before he started.
He sincerely regretted not changing his mind. His small Ford wasn't meant for off-roading, especially not in a sandy, dry desert. Even as the wind whipped his hair back, only sand hit his face, not making him any cooler and only making his uncomfortable situation worse. He rolled up the window and set the air con up to max, which did barely anything. The heat still seeped through the windows of the car. Darn you, sun. Only then did he start second guessing moving to a remote desert...
Cody finally arrived at the lab an hour later. His face was plastered with sand and he was stiff from sitting but he walked up to the back gate, investigating. It looked like a stray military car had crashed into it, rendering the insides of the fence accessible. Cody took a deep breath and walked in. Suddenly, he realized he could hear a pulsating sound through the quiet desert air. It almost sounded like... A heartbeat? Quieting, he found it was coming from massive satelites surrounding the fences. It unsettled him, bugged him even after he moved on.
A scream echoed through the air.
Cody jumped and scrambled for some kind of weapon. But it was quiet all the sudden. Was he just hallucinating from the heat?
He finally reached the back door, gently easing it open. Inside was a desk with papers piled around it. The chair that belonged to the desk was strewn randomly in the middle of the room. Cody glanced quickly at it, but there was really nothing to see. He traversed into the middle of the lab, where a big white door was. He glanced at the pad on the right side of the door. It looked like someone had slammed against it in a rush. Multiple people, actually. It looked like he needed a keycard though... Darn it!
Cody looked around the lab, displacing folders and papers everywhere. Finally, the adrenaline of his discovery wore off and he realized he was starving... Could he eat from this kitchen? He wandered around for a bit and found the break room. Breaking open thr fridge, he could see a lunch that still looked good... But was it really? He was too hungry to know and immediately gulped it down. He had 9 suspicious folders on him that he thought might help with something. He didn't know what yet. He had a pounding headache from the heat of the air and missing air cons from around the lab, so he decided to head home.
Yuck. Cody felt horrible. According to his stomach, that lunch was not good. Now, he felt disgusting. He had thrown up three times since returning home. Whatever was in that lunch didn't do anything for Cody's heath. He must have looked like a sheet of blank paper by now. Despite his health and all the warnings his mind was giving him, Cody got up and walked down the stairs to the listening device. He quickly fell into the chair, beads of sweat dotting his forehead. Instead of booting up the multitude of screens, Cody scanned the room for his phone. He had to text Seb or Sammy and ask them to bring him a thermometer and a bottle of fever reducer. He grasped the back of the chair, standing up, and hobbled over to the shelf on the other side of the room where he had left his phone. He quickly typed in to Seb,
He sat back down and booted up all of the screens and started twisting and turning some knobs. Cody started to hear static from the listening device. He was listening in on an unsuspecting scientist who said,
"The order came from the top. No one is allowed in or out of the lab."
Then it went out of focus.Cody clicked and pressed and turned but-
Seb came in trying to balance a cup of water, a thermometer, and a small container of fever reliever and set them down on Cody's desk. Cody quickly took them and instantly started feeling better. Cody pulled up a coding site on one of his screens, remembering a computer he saw in the lab. Before he knew it, the night had passed and it was 4 A.M. Cody rewarded himself with a nap. After a few hours, Cody set off for the lab again. Sand dusted his face again and it felt scratchy, but he walked in, ready to take on that computer. He hacked for an hour before finally getting past the log in screen. Then he sifted through files upon files until he finally found something.
A security video.
This particular video had pixelation everywhere but... He could make out an ominous purple glow. He uploaded it to a flash drive and yanked it out of the USB drive. He scrambled for something to put all his evidence in. He grabbed a manila folder and quickly stuck all his stuff onto it, using a string he found hanging from a cork board to close it and attach the flash drive of voice recordings and that security video. Finally, he headed towards the path to home, his power finally hitting him like a massive hand had slapped him in the face. Cody turned up the radio and it blasted into his ears, shaking the whole car, but he didn't care. Not one bit. He had a top secret dossier, and he was going to give it to someone he knew could supply him with a key card. He had money from his family to bribe if needed. He was going to make history.
