Sammy stared out the window watching people stroll by when the mail truck pulled up and slipped a box and two envelopes into the house's mailbox. Sammy had nothing better to do, so he tossed some sneakers on and jogged outside to grab the mail. The box was addressed to Cody Jett, the first envelope was addressed to the address of Seb, Cody, and Sammy's house, and the second was addressed to Sammy. He went inside and tore open the envelope addressed to all three of the housemates: just bills. Hooray.

The second envelope was a letter from his mother. He read the whole thing: how she missed him so much and she hoped it was going well. The letter itself smelled like... Normality. Home. He set the letter down on the table, then took the box and walked out to the garage.

"What's this?" Sammy asked Cody, handing him the box.
"Nothing much, I assume," Cody replied.
"Who's-" Sammy glanced at the return address, "Mindy Huang?"
"Oh, she's someone I met yesterday while I was out."
"Ok. Any idea what's inside?"
"No idea."
"Alright then. Who're you listening in on now?"
"Uh... No one."
"Who, Cody?"
"Um... Mindy."

The sound emitting from the machine Cody was using flickered to life, stopping its static buzzing for one sentence: "I'm a botanist! I don't know anything about... Space rocks!"

Then it dissolved into static yet again.
"What the-" Sammy asked, startled.
"Uh..." Cody stuttered.
"Did you seriously-"
"Yes!"
"Oh my God, Cody. Are you sure about this?"
"Can you... Leave?"
"I mean... Yeah. I guess the garage is really the only privacy you have. I'll- I'll go..."
"Thanks, Sammy," Cody replied, tense.

Exiting the room, Sammy's mind started to wander. Was Cody really doing this? Better question: Was Cody starting to take this too far?

Sammy had heard that a new movie had come to RedBox yesterday, and he and Braylen had planned a movie night tonight. Sammy also invited Seb, but the blonde had "other plans" tonight. Sammy really needed to get his mind off things, and a good old movie night with Braylen would do just that.

After a whole debate over the phone, Sammy and Braylen decided to host the movie night at Braylen's house, but Sammy would have to bring snacks. Luckily, Sammy had already bought a bag of Doritos and white cheddar popcorn in anticipation. It was a good thing, too, because their movie night was scheduled to begin at 6 P.M. and it was already 5, and Braylen's house was 45 minutes away, minimum. Sammy grabbed a plastic grocery bag and stuffed his snacks inside, plus a blanket because he just knew he'd end up staying the night at Braylen's. Sammy always fell asleep right in the middle of the movie, and he anticipated it this time. Sammy tossed on a sweatshirt, grabbed his car keys, and strolled out the door. He stuffed the bag in the passenger seat and turned up the air con to max.

"Darn, it's hot," Sammy muttered under his breath, cranking the radio up. Sammy really didn't have a preference in music. He just listened to what either of the other boys that lived in his house put on. Seb tended to listen to workout music, while Cody preferred Alternative or Alternative Rock. Whatever was on depended on the day, really.

Sammy's car was a deep red Toyota, and it was at least 5 or 6 years old, so it took a few tries before the car's engine rumbled to life. By the time Sammy reached Braylen's small house that he still shared with his family, it was 5:55. Sammy made a quick wish, then hopped out of the car, grabbing his snacks on the way. He made his way up to the navy blue door and knocked, leaning against the siding of Braylen's house before red hair was visible through a crack between the door and the doorframe. Upon seeing Sammy, Braylen unlatched the door quickly and gave him big hug.

"You ready?" Braylen asked, obviously excited.
"Born ready," Sammy replied with a smile. Braylen pulled open the door, gesturing for Sammy to come inside. The corridor that was visible upon entering the house led into a simple living room, one with a cheap tan couch and a small TV on a simple wood TV stand.

Sammy set the bag of snacks on the couch, then sat down beside them, Braylen on the opposite side. Braylen cracked open the popcorn and Sammy laid a blanket over his own lap, then crossed his legs under himself.

The movie both him and Braylen had agreed on was called 3 A.M. It sounded like a not-so-great horror movie, and Sammy assumed it wasn't. Sammy took out the bag of Doritos, then crushed the plastic bag previously holding his snacks into a crude ball and set the sheet of plastic on the ground.

Sammy opened the bag of Doritos, watching as the beginning scene scrolled by.

"3 A.M," it read, "BEWARE OF THE DEVIL'S HOUR!"

Braylen laughed at one of the character's stupidity in one of the beginning scenes. The movie, to both boys' surprise, got pretty scary, gradually. At first sight of the featured monster, Sammy barely contained a scream. As the movie's plot became more complicated and the graphics and story got overall scarier, Sammy and Braylen moved steadily closer together. When the movie had barely passed it's climax, the two boys were almost pressed together at the sides. Neither of them were aware of the close quarters they had come to be in. Both were engulfed by the movie. Suddenly, the monster jumped out of nowhere, and Sammy was practically in Braylen's lap by then. Only then did Braylen look over at Sammy and find how close he was to the other boy's face.

Sammy looked into Braylen's eyes, but he couldn't tell what Braylen was feeling. Braylen's eyes stared back at Sammy's, entranced by the shades of pink spiraling through Sammy's iris. They stayed like that for a minute, maybe two, before a crash from the TV echoed through the room, then a high pitched scream. Both tore their eyes away from each other and stared back at the TV. The two boys still stayed together, though. Neither wanted to pull away.

Another jumpscare. The two boys were quite literally pressed hard against each other now. This time, their faces were closer, and they stared into each other's eyes again. Sammy could've sworn he'd seen Braylen's eyes drop down to Sammy's lips, but that was wishful thinking.

Probably.

Sammy's gaze went back to the TV, but every so often his eyes went to Braylen's lips.

Sammy wondered what it would be like to kiss Braylen once...

He shook the thought from his mind trying to focus on the movie, but he kept thinking about the two times during the movie Sammy and his best friend had almost kissed. They had come so close...

Sammy couldn't focus on the movie. He just couldn't. Eventually, he fell asleep.
