It was time.
Seb was going to be off work in less than an hour, Sammy had ideas for "defeating the Mother" recruits, Cody had a list of people who could help him.
That list read:
- Seb
- Sloane
- Micah
- Braylen
- Sammy ✔️
- Cody (Me) ✔️In the time between the contacting of the recruits and now, Cody knew what he had to do. Something dreadful.
Call Mindy.
So Cody instructed Sammy to stay downstairs while he went upstairs to think up a text message to send to Mindy. He decided on:
Hey Mindy! I'm heading up to the lab, meet me there?
and sent it.Cody waited for her to reply, and when she did, it was a simple, innocent, "Sure!" After recieving this, he just awaited her arrival. When she got there, Cody greeted her with a hug (he tried not to make it awkward, but it sure felt off) and then asked her the question that had been racking his mind for ages, a question which would dig under the foundation of their relationship and pry it out of the ground:
"Why did you betray me?"
"W- what?" Mindy stuttered, the fake smile on her face falling.
"You're working for the Mother."
"W- what do you mean?"
"You planted alien plants around the town! You work for the Mother! You're the very worst kind of traitor!" Cody yelled, releasing his anger. Mindy glared at him as an evil look engulfed her brown eyes.
"I'm not a traitor," she said, sickly sweet, "I'm just loyal to someone else."
"To a freaking plant?"
"To a godly, powerful creature that could wipe out all of humanity if it wanted to, Jett," Mindy snarled, saying Cody's name like a curse
"You know what?!" Cody yelled, furious, "Go be with your stupid plant! Go possess yourself! I don't care!" Cody yanked a glowing red fruit out of his bag and thrust it into her face. Mindy gently took the fruit, tossing it in her hands a few times.
"Oh, Jett, you do care. I can see it in your eyes," Mindy mused. Cody glared at her in response.
"Jett," Mindy said, giggling, "Oh, Jett, did you love me? Oh, poor baby got his heart broken. I'll be on my way. Thanks for the gift." Mindy smiled at him, seeming more like a merciless viper baring its fangs than a smile, and walked out, brandishing the red fruit. When Mindy was finally gone, Cody finally let tears roll down his face. He wasn't nessessarily in love with her, but just because their relationship was fake didn't mean the feelings weren't, in some way, real. Cody plopped down in a chair, buried his face in his hands, and began to cry. Saving the world and losing someone you liked was a good excuse for crying, right?
After a few minutes, Cody decided to go wash his face off in the bathroom, then found the sink infested with purple vines. Hooray. He grabbed a paper towel off the dispenser on the wall and wiped his face with it. It didn't do much without water, but it would have to do.
Cody made his way back downstairs where Sammy was waiting, fidgeting with his fingers.
"Hey, I'm back," Cody muttered, looking at the ground and heading over to the back corner of the room and getting a vaccine out of his bag to look at so he didn't have to look at Sammy with his embarrassingly teary face.
"You good?" Sammy asked, probably sensing the hurt in Cody's voice.
"Yeah," Cody replied with a bit of a voice crack.
"If you say so," Sammy said, still fidgeting idly with his fingers.
"So uh, did you decide to add Micah?" Sammy asked, sounding genuinely curious.
"Yeah, I did. From the way you describe him, he sounds like a valueable asset. Although, that might be your height playing in."
"Might be. He seemed really tall though! Then again, you're right, I'm tiny..."
"Yeah, you really are."
"What about Braylen?" An innocent tone took over Sammy's voice when he said the name of his best friend. Like he was just... Happy whenever he heard the name.
"I added him too. We need all the help we can get." Cody checked his watch. Seb would be driving home now, and Cody figured that would be a reasonable time to call him, since he could just change his route a bit to get to the lab.
"Seb's almost home. I'm gonna call him," Cody informed Sammy, opening up the phone call app on his phone and scrolling through recents until he found Seb's name. He clicked on it and waited for the ringing to subside.
"Hello?" He said into the phone after the ringing faded into silence.
"What?" Seb said, an edge to his voice.
"Uh... I need you to come to the lab. ASAP."
"Why are you in the lab again, Cody?! Seriously--"
"Seb! We can argue about this later. Just come. It's important. Invite Sloane too, people really need to see this," Cody said, trying to convey panic.
"What the-- ok, fine. This better not be a trick, or I swear I will--" Cody hung up."Hey Sammy, got that Micah guy's number?" Cody asked, turning to Sammy.
"Uh--" Sammy managed to stutter.
"Well?"
"Oh yeah! He gave it to me when I saw him on the street 'in case of emergency.'" Sammy told Cody.
"What is it?" Cody asked, pulling up the dial screen. Sammy walked over to Cody, but luckily in the dim light didn't notice he had been crying, took his phone, typed in a phone number and handed the phone back to Cody. Cody clicked the call button, asking a quick, "Hello?" as the ringing stopped."Who is this?" a deep voice on the other end answered.
"Sammy's friend."
"Oh."
"Yeah, something happened at the lab, can you get here? ASAP?"
"I- yes. I can. What is it?"
"It's... Hard to explain. Can you just... Be here? I'll explain it then." Cody said.
"Sure," Micah answered, then hung up.And finally, Braylen. But Cody left that up to Sammy, who came back in about a minute, happily reporting that Braylen would be there soon.
Cody had all his recruits. Now, it was time to vaccinate them and save the freaking town. Or maybe even the world.
