"Dean, where were you? Weren't we supposed to get lunch?", Lisa asks me, as we walk inside together.
I nod, trying to keep the tears from spilling out of my eyes.
Leaving her isn't something that I ever thought about doing.
The thought crushes me deeply.
Ben is sitting on the couch, playing with some sort of action figures.
He smiles up at me and waves.
"Hi, Dean."
I bit my lip and flash him a smile back.
"Hey, Ben. What's up?"
His eyes light up and he points at the figures splayed across the coffee table.
"I'm playing soldier. Wanna play?"
He picks one up and offers it to me.
I shake my head.
"Nah, I gotta talk to your mom for a minute. Okay?"
Ben sighs and nods, reluctantly.
"Okay. Will you play later?"
I force a smile, right now all I want to do is cry.
I shrug.
"Maybe. We'll see."
I know instantly that it's a lie.
I won't be playing 'soldier' with the kid any time soon.
Nonetheless though, I try not to let him know that.
Without another word, I slip quietly out of the room.
Ben doesn't notice because, he's playing with his action figures again.
In the kitchen, Lisa stands by the open fridge, gathering lunch supplies.
She smiles warmly, when she sees me.
"Ah, there you are. You getting hungry? I thought that instead of going out we could have lunch here. That okay?"
I nod, my vision starting to blur.
How am I supposed to do this?
Leave the woman I love?
How am I supposed to accept that she's no longer human?
A monster?
I can't.
So, I smile.
"Sure, sounds great."
She than goes about preparing some sandwiches.
"You okay with ham?", she asks, cutting thin slices of the meat resting on the cutting board.
I nod, grabbing a seat at the counter-thing attached to where she stands making lunch.
Her dark almost black hair is hanging down in a frizzy mess and her eyes are dull and sad.
She knows something is wrong but, is not exactly sure what.
"Dean, is something wrong?"
I don't look up, just firmly grab her hands from across the counter.
"Lise, I need you to listen to me. Something is very wrong with you...", my voice trails off, growing weaker, till it's just a whisper.
"I'm a WHAT?!", she shrieks, pulling away from me in an instant.
I sigh, somehow I saw this coming.
"You're a demon, Lise. A monster. It's not safe for us to be together anymore. You need to understand me when I say that, I would never hurt you. But, if you stay here, if you don't listen to me, you will put us all, Ben included in great danger. Now, I love you, Lisa. So, that's why I am leaving you. I don't want to see you like this, even now, you are changing. You're not YOU, Lisa! Understand?!"
I slam my fist against the counter, making a loud banging sound.
It echoes around the room, no doubt Ben has also heard it.
Lisa flashes me a look, it's of despair but also, seething rage.
"GO!", she yells at me, throwing the cutting board to the tiled floor.
It clatters loudly as it lands.
"GO, AND NEVER COME BACK! I NEVER WANT TO SEE YOU AGAIN! LEAVE NOW, BEFORE I CALL THE POLICE! LEAVE ME AND MY SON ALONE!"
Her eyes are now bright with a vengeance, a longing to destroy.
I take one last look at her, before I run as fast as I possibly can out the door.
But, instead of stumbling down the doorsteps, I get taken once again by a bright white light and end up in a very familiar diner.
With a very familiar person.
Who, just so happens to be eating a burger and chewing on his milkshake straw.
