Mr. Matthews scratched the broken piece of white chalk on the board.
"Home," he said, turning to face the class. "What exactly is home?"
I raised my eyebrows and looked around at everyone's bored faces. "Matthews, what does this have to do with History?"
"Nothing," he desperately admitted. "But it's the last day of school and I have no idea what to teach, so bear with me, would you?"
"Then don't teach at all," I rolled my eyes and glanced over at Riley, who mindlessly fiddled with her pencil. She nodded in agreement but he shook his head, ready to bore the class with his unwanted lecture.
"Does this have to do with us?" I asked. "I mean, everything you teach has to do with us..."
He hesitantly nodded and continued. "So, what makes a home a home?"
"Well, there are houses and homes," Farkle's voice filled the silence. "A house is nothing but four walls until someone enters and makes it their own. Home is where someone belongs, somewhere where you feel safe. So, it's really the people who make up a home."
I sighed and shook my head. "Can we just go home now?"
Mr. Matthews grinned and pointed at me as I fell into his trap. "What do you consider home?"
I groaned and leaned against the back of my chair. I decided not to answer in hopes that he'd brush it off, but he stared at me, anticipating my answer.
"Fine, other than my mom...I guess you guys are my home. Even though I don't live in your house or whatever, you're still there for me. And you make me feel safe," I glanced over at Riley, who gave me a toothy smile, which made me smile back.
"Right," he nodded. "Keep that in mind, Maya. No matter what happens, we will always be your home."
I furrowed my eyebrows, and before I could ask what that meant, the bell rang.
Everyone quickly stood up and ran out of the classroom. I dashed out in seconds but realized that Riley's slow ass was still inside.
"Riles," I shouted from the doorway. "Let's go!"
"Relax, I'm coming," she groaned, slinging her backpack onto her shoulders. She walked up to me and intertwined our hands.
We stepped outside of the building, catching Farkle and Lucas waiting near the subway for us.
"Hey, took you long enough," Lucas shook his head and smiled at Riley.
Lucas and Riley used to go out, but Riley decided that she didn't like him anymore. She broke up with him a few months ago. As much as I annoyed her about it, she never told me why she didn't like being with him. Lucas wasn't completely over her but he understood that they would never work out.
"Yeah, sorry," I said, glaring over at my best friend. "Riley decided to take her sweet time getting out of the classroom."
"Whatever," she groaned, walking alongside Farkle. "So, what are you guys gonna do this summer?"
"I don't know," Farkle sighed. "My parents are busy with work, so we don't really have time to plan a vacation or anything."
"I'm actually gonna be in Texas the whole summer," Lucas told us. "I'm leaving in a week."
