r.m.

Every second I spend with Maya makes it harder to hide my real feelings.

How am I supposed to pretend I'm not completely head over heels for her when everything she does is perfect? She could flat out tell me to jump off a roof, and I would in a heartbeat.

Either I'm whipped or absolutely insane...both.

I reached over for the ketchup bottle and Maya grabbed my wrist.

"Riley, please..."

I smirked and squeezed ketchup onto my macaroni, causing her to gag and rise from the table.

"I can't even look at you," she dramatically said and looked around the room.

"It's just ketchup," I rolled my eyes.

"Ketchup and macaroni don't belong together, okay?!" she huffed. "I'm so glad you're leaving...no one wants people like you here, polluting the earth."

I put my hand over my heart and scoffed. "Peaches...you say that now, but in three weeks you'll be crying your eyes out."

She stuck her tongue out and mocked me. I rolled my eyes and continued to stuff my mouth with food, which made her shiver in disgust. She grabbed her bowl and moved on the other side of the table.

The front door opened, revealing Auggie and Ava.

"Hey, losers," Ava breathed, plopping onto the couch.

"Ugh," Maya groaned. "Why are you here again?"

Ava has been coming over almost every day, claiming that she needed to spend as much time with Auggie before we were off to London. The two were cute together, and it sucks that they'll be split.

Honestly, every single thing about moving all the way to London sucks. Losing the best friends ever and losing the girl that I cannot stop thinking about. But, I guess life is full of plot twists, so all I can do is flow with it.

"Because Auggie is my husband," she rolled her eyes.

Maya slowly nodded and continued eating her macaroni. I quickly finished my food and started washing the pile of dishes left in the sink. Mom told me to clean them last night, but I completely forgot. Better late than never.

Mom and Dad rushed out of the house before anyone else was awake. They had to clean out Mom's office before we left, so they decided to go today.

I grabbed a sponge and began scrubbing the plates. Maya came over and dropped off her empty bowl, quickly walking away afterward.

"Thanks for the help," I mumbled, tossing a glare over my shoulder.

"Anytime, honey," she grinned.

I sighed and rinsed the dish, hearing her footsteps backtracking. She grabbed a towel and dried the dishes, carefully placing them on the rack.

I smiled and continued. Once we finished, we decided to hang out with Farkle. I groaned as I realized that Auggie and Ava were still here.

"Nevermind," I sighed, gesturing towards the kids.

"We can take them with us," she suggested with a shrug. "It'll be fun! We can go out for ice cream, yeah?"

I nodded, deciding that spending time with them wouldn't hurt. "Hey, guys, you want ice cream?"

They jumped onto their feet with their eyes lit up. I laughed and we slipped our shoes on. I texted Farkle to meet us at the ice cream shop in a few minutes.

We walked out of the house and locked up. Maya held Ava's hand while I took Auggie's. The streets were crowded, as always, and my parents would kill me if we lost a child.

We approached the shop and found Farkle sitting in a booth, staring at his phone.

"Hey, Farkle," Maya greeted, sliding into the seat. I sat next to her.

"Hey, guys," he looked up from the screen and beamed. "You brought the kiddies!"

"Hi, Farkle! I haven't seen you in forever!" Auggie exclaimed, giving him a fist bump.

"Hey, buddy," Farkle laughed. "Hey, Ava. Is Auggie treating you nicely?"

Ava nodded and Auggie crossed his arms with a pout. "Of course, who do you think I am?!"

Farkle put his hands up and nervously laughed at him.

We ordered our ice cream and listened to Auggie and Ava's conversation about which flavor is the best.

"It's vanilla," I rolled my eyes, causing everyone to glare at me. "What?! You can turn vanilla into anything! It's so versatile! Add chocolate, you got chocolate ice cream. Add mint, it's a whole new flavor--"

"Or you can just get mint ice cream," Maya cut me off. "Which is the superior flavor, change my mind."

I sighed, not wanting to argue about ice cream flavors. They continued listing reasons as to why their favorite flavor is above all. I zoned out and thoughts of Maya took over my mind.

I really wanted to tell her how I feel just to get it off my chest, but everything happened to occur at the worst time possible. Should I tell her knowing that we won't ever really be together? I mean, there's a slim chance that she'll even reciprocate feelings, but still.

Should I leave and miss an opportunity to actually feel happiness?

Lucas told me to chase after what makes me happy. Everything about her makes me feel that sensation. In my eyes, she radiates happiness and that's what attracts me to her.

I was shaken out of my thoughts with a nudge from Maya. I quickly blinked and looked at her.

"You okay?" she asked.

"Yeah," I replied. "Sorry, just lost in thought..."

"About what?"

"Nothing," I told her.

She smirked and nudged me again. "Come on, tell me! Is it Lucas? Do you miss him?"

"No," I rolled my eyes as she wriggled her eyebrows. "Why does it matter who I'm thinking of?"

"Because I wanna know who you're thinking of," she deadpanned. "And you can't deny that it's a 'who' because you just admitted it, ha!"

"It's really not a big deal," I hesitantly said, hoping she'd let it go.

She continued staring at me, expecting an answer.

"You," I sighed.

She raised an eyebrow and slowly, a small smile spread on her face. "Oh."

"Just how different my life would be without you," I quickly added, hoping she didn't think it's normal for me to daydream about her...even though it really is. "I'm still hung up over Lucas leaving, and I can't stop imagining how awful everything would be without you."

"You and me," she smiled and held both of my hands. "We'll be okay. We'll meet new people and even though we'll be miles away, you'll always be on my mind. I could never forget you even if I tried. Just...promise that you'll go out and live your life to the fullest?"

I nodded.

"Promise you won't waste half of it crying over me," she smirked.

I let out a laugh and quickly shook my head. "I don't know if that's possible."

"Yeah," she softly said. "But hey, we have three weeks to ourselves. Save the crying for later, right?"

I nodded in agreement, but I don't think I could, especially since I've already started. Every night that I laid next to her, I'd hear her the faint sound of her breathing which gave me comfort. Knowing that I won't see her anymore breaks my heart and I can't fight the tears from slipping out.

I don't think that I'll ever feel as safe as I am with her.
