"Oh my goodness, Riley! What happened?!"

I walked into the kitchen, completely forgetting that my face was a wreck. I froze at the doorway and forcefully laughed.

Mom came to get a closer look and I squinted as she touched around my eye.

"Um," I began, unsure of how to explain what happened. "It's really not a big deal."

"Not a big deal?!" Dad said in a shrill voice. "You're beaten up! Who did it? I swear to god, I'm gonna kick their-"

"Relax," I cut him off with a laugh. "It was just some guy who wouldn't stop pestering me and Maya."

"For being together?" Mom furrowed her eyebrows.

I nodded and bit my lip. "Yeah, but it's fine. Maya nearly destroyed him by swinging her fist at his face a dozen times."

"That doesn't make it okay," Dad said in an angry tone. "No one goes after my girls! Did you know who it was?"

"No, it was some random kid around our age. He bumped into me and just kept talking and...saying that we aren't supposed to be together."

Mom gave me a hug and I hesitantly returned it. "Don't let anyone tell you who you can or can't be with. It's your life and your decision, okay?"

"But isn't he right?" I said in a small voice. "Isn't it wrong that I like a girl?"

"No, sweetie," Dad softly said. "What's wrong is our society and their perception on what's 'normal.' We don't care what you do as long as you're happy. I think everyone should look at things like this that way. Why bash on someone else's happiness? And you don't just like a girl, you love her."

I smiled and gave him a hug. He pulled away after a moment and examined my face.

"Dad, I'm fine," I sighed. "Just a little bruised."

"Okay, but if it keeps hurting, tell us," he said after a while. "How could anyone do this to you?"

I didn't know why anybody would hurt another person at all, so I shrugged.

"Did he hurt Maya?"

"Yeah, but you should've seen him," I raised my eyebrows as I thought back to his beat up face. "Maya really knocked the shit out of him."

He muttered something about my language and shook his head.

"Where is Maya?" Mom curiously asked as she began clearing the table.

"She went home," I said. "I don't know, I got mad that she beat him up so I told her to go. I didn't wanna see her get hurt because of me."

"Wouldn't you stand up for her if someone hit her?" she questioned.

"Yeah," I sighed. "I know, I'm stupid. I shouldn't have snapped at her like that."

"Why don't you go over there?" Dad smiled. "Don't be mad at her, especially when we're leaving so soon."

My face fell as I realized that I lost a whole night with her.

I went up into my room and changed out of my pajamas. My heart almost jumped out of my chest when I heard a knock on the window. I quickly got dressed and came out of the closet. ha

Maya was struggling to climb in and I stifled a laugh. I walked over and sat on the bench as she finally got inside.

"Hi, honey," she smiled. "I'm home."
