I can hear my phone buzzing on the nightstand beside me as soon as I wake up the next morning. I knew that news of our relationship was going to spread quickly and create a stir but perhaps I underestimated just how big of a stir it was going to make.
I roll over to find Maya but where she usually sleeps beside me I find the bed empty. She must've run off somewhere. I grab my phone and start trying to sift through the millions of messages and missed calls that I have waiting for me but it quickly becomes overwhelming to the point where my head is already throbbing when I make it downstairs. "Morning" Maya greets me, lifting a cup of coffee to her lips as I walk into the kitchen.
"Morning baby" I reply, dropping a quick kiss to her lips before stepping behind her to retrieve my own cup of coffee. She looks towards my phone and chuckles as it vibrates four times. "You should really turn that off if you don't want it to drive you insane all day. I almost threw mine out the window before I finally came to that realization."
I take her advice and power it down before taking a seat beside her. "I take it the family isn't exactly thrilled" I guess and she laughs, taking another sip of her coffee.
"I think I got through sixteen strongly worded messages from my mom before I finally decided I didn't give a shit about her opinion" she says bluntly and I laugh, leaning forward on the counter.
"What do you think they'd say if we got engaged?" I ask carefully and her cheeks turn a rosy red color while she takes her lip between her teeth.
"I think she'd probably guess that I was knocked up" she admits and I lose it, shaking my head in amusement. Contrary to popular belief, I may have gotten around before I met Maya but I was always careful. I wanted kids but not before the company was stable.
"Do you think she'll like having me as a son in law?" I ask, taking a sip of my coffee and she immediately shakes her head.
"You're too invested in your career. She'll insist that you'll leave me to go back to playing the field. Cheetahs don't change their stripes" she quotes and I roll my eyes. I was never the person that people had thought I was before. I only slept around to keep myself from getting hurt again but in reality, a serious commitment and a family was everything I ever wanted.
"I guess we'll just have to prove her wrong then" I reply cheekily and she nods in agreement before the front door swings open and Alison's loud voice booms through the foyer.
"We're back" she squeals, running into the room and throwing her bags down onto the table causing Maya to jump at the sudden loud noise. "Miss us?"
"Oh of course" I reply sarcastically and Ali flips me off making the girls around us laugh. Ali's eyes flicker over to Maya and a smile spreads across her face.
"We saw by the way. Congrats on going public and the big promotion" she adds pointedly and I honestly can't tell if she's impressed by Maya's promotion or worried if I've lost my mind in giving Maya half the company once she agrees to be my wife. "I suppose the proposal will be happening soon then?" she presses and Maya shrugs, downing the rest of her coffee.
"That's up to him" she says, placing her hand on my shoulder as she stands up. "But I have an appointment to get to so I'll let you two catch up. I love you" she adds, placing a quick kiss to my lips. "And welcome home ladies" she says finally, smiling at the women before walking out of the room and leaving me alone with my best friend and her girlfriend.
"So are you?" Beth demands, taking over Maya's seat once she's gone and I roll my eyes. My proposal plans would remain a secret...when I made them.
"Eventually" I reply dismissively, standing up and grabbing my coffee. "Look, you should both settle back in. I'm gonna head to the gym. I'll see you both later. Maybe we could do a family dinner thing" I suggest and while Alison obviously wants to get more information out of me about this proposal she doesn't push any further and nods instead in agreement to my idea.
