I woke up early.
That is it. I did not have a nightmare, there was no explosion, nothing to cause me to awaken at three in the morning.
Moving to get up, I tried to untangle my limbs from Kaldur's. I was successful until he wrapped his arm around me, pulling me towards his chest.
I rolled my eyes and moved again, substituting my pillow for my body.
Quietly I snuck out of the bedroom and towards the kitchen.
I flipped a light on before moving to the cupboards. My eyes scanned the shelves before I pulled out a pan.
I was moving on autopilot as I moved through the kitchen, trying to stay quiet so I would not wake Connor.
A smile was on my face as I placed the pan in the oven. After I set the timer I paced around the room waiting impatiently.
Soon enough, the timer was under thirty seconds and I turned it off before checking my food.
I did not eat well yesterday. I felt nauseous around lunch, but I forced myself to eat...leading to me throwing up soon after.
I was convinced it was done and I pulled it out so it could cool. I turned off the oven and waited.
And waited.
And waited.
It seemed to take an eternity until it was cool to the touch. At that point my smile widened and I finished preparing it.
As I stared at my handiwork, I decided Kaldur should enjoy it too.
I walked into his bedroom and lightly shook him. "Kaldur." I whispered. "Wake up."
He groaned and sat up. "What time is it?"
"Almost five. I...I want you to come out to the living room with me." I pulled him off of his bed, laughing when he fell on the floor.
I helped him up before walking with him. He froze in the doorway of the living room.
My smile once again made an appearance as I looked up at him. "Happy birthday Kaldur."
He returned the smile. He walked over to the cake, staring at the thirty-four burning candles among the iced swirls of water.
"You did this?"
"Do not doubt me Kaldur." I moved to stand next to him. The heat from the fire washed across me.
He laughed softly before pressing a kiss to my forehead. "Happy birthday-"
"Do not say it." I glared.
He placed his hands between us. "I will not for today."
"Thank you. Do you want to blow them out together?"
"I believe you should wait three hours."
"Kaldur."
"I am kidding. On three?"
I nodded, moving so I was not going to blow in his face.
"One." He began.
"Two." I said.
"Three." The word shot off of our tongues followed by the air in our lungs.
After the candles were all out, we pulled them out. I grabbed a knife and cut two pieces for us.
"To surviving another year." I held my piece in the air.
"To surviving another year." Kaldur tapped his against mine before taking a bite.
I was on my second piece when I had an idea.
"Kaldur."
"Yes?"
His answer was me smashing my cake against his face.
"It is on."
Most of the cake was gone by the time anyone else entered the living room. Unfortunately, it was Batman and Orin.
"What is going on here?" Batman asked.
"Uh...would you believe me if I said it was a training exercise?" I managed to laugh under the combined glares.
"Clean this up." Orin ordered. "I do not-" He cut off as cake hit his face.
Then his glare intensified. "Perseus."
"Payback is sweet my king." I smirked. "Now if you excuse me, I will be cleaning."
"Why are you here my king?" Kaldur asked.
"I was coming to inform Percy that the jellyfish is settling in quite well. Why is there a cake?"
"It is Kaldur's birthday, I decided to surprise him." I spoke as I wiped down the counter.
"Why are there so many candles?" Batman walked over.
"The time of her birth is not far away so I assume she did not want to make two cakes."
"Correct. Now please allow us to clean." I moved to do the dishes.
Orin walked over and helped me.
"Aquaman, let them clean up their own mess."
"It is fine. I owe her this at least. I hope this makes up for your seventh birthday?"
I nodded and did not react as he placed a kiss on my temple.
"Happy birthday, my daughter. To you as well my son."
"Thank you."
"What happened on her seventh birthday?"
"A fight between myself and Ocean-Master. It ended with a cake thrown in her face." Orin responded. "That is why I cannot be too upset with her. I did not expect you to remember in all honesty."
"It is hard to forget your king being the reason you ended up with a concussion on your birthday." I mumbled, turning around. "May Kaldur and I use our powers to have this clean before the others awaken?"
"Of course."
My tattoos began to glow. I guided the water around the room, leaving everything spotless.
Kaldur was doing the same.
I could tell Batman was analyzing something about the two of us, but I do not know what.
"Tula and Garth have been asking about you."
"Does Tula still believe she can defeat me in a fight?" I dropped the water into the sink.
"She has advanced further than you Percy."
"You know I have a higher affinity for the mystic arts than she does my king."
"Enough. Go get dressed." Batman ordered. "The rest of the Team will be here in an hour. You'll receive your mission then."
I looked at Kaldur as Batman walked away.
"There goes our hope for a peaceful birthday."
