A/N: Enjoy something I found in my drafts from a while back. A bit of a vent, but a cool AU idea
“P-p-Pa-Parapph-Paraphr-rasing pe-people p-p-peaks p-pe-p-p-pe-”
“-It’s okay, just take your time with it,”
“-p-pp-p-f- Fuck!”
Brody frowned, grabbing Violet’s hand and giving it a squeeze. “Don’t get frustrated, Vi. Let’s just go back to names, okay?”
Violet sighed, giving Brody a tired look. “It’s not t-t-tt-t-that e-easy,”
“I know it’s not.” Brody comforted. “But you asked me for help. I’m not gonna ask her for you, and I’m going to help you like you asked. Names, Vi.”
Violet slumped, huffing. “L-Louis, R-rr-rru-r-Ruby,” “-Good,” “-Om-o-Omar, M-mmm-m-mmar-Marlon, Mm-mmm-Mi-Mitch, B-bbb-Br-Bbb-Bb-”
Brody watched with sad eyes as her friend’s lips curved, moving to form the word and failing. Before, her stutter hadn’t been something she’d worried about. Hell, she hadn’t talked enough for it to even be an issue. All of her teachers knew, and therefore she never had to present or read aloud. Now, however, she seemed determined to keep Clementine from realizing just how bad it was. Suddenly, speech therapy was important; something she had once angrily refused that she was practically begging her friends to help her with.
“C’mon, Vi. Relax, remember? It helps if you fidget.” Brody reminded her.
“B-Br-B-bbb-b-Br-Brody-Br-ody,” Violet squeezed out, face relaxing as her fingers began circling the pad of her thumb.
“See? I told you you could do it!” Brody grinned, only to receive a disapproving glare from the blonde.
“W-www-whatever,”
Brody shook her head. “I think you can ask her.”
Green eyes widened. “R-rr-rreally? Alre-Already?”
“You’ve struggled with my name since third grade, Violet.”
“That’s w-when we met…?”
“Exactly.” Brody watched a small smile flicker over her features, lightly shoving her shoulder. “There’s a reason you always call me dude, isn’t there?”
Violet’s arms crossed. “....Yes,”
“You’ve got this, Vi. You can ask her.”
A shaky breath. “I c-I can as-ask her,” She repeated, half hyping herself up.
“You can,”
“Yeah…” Violet cringed at the thought, clenching and unclenching her fists. “ I h- I have to g-gg-go do it nnn-n-nnow, though. W-ww-ww-” She paused, taking a deep breath, slowing her speech. “While. I can.”
Brody herself cringed, though doing her best to hide it and remain supportive for her friend. “....Now? Isn’t Clem doing anything?”
Violet thought of her best friend’s neighbor/best-friends schedule, slowly shaking her head. “The r-rr-rain this mm-mmm-mor-morning can-canceled the g-game.”
“Ah,” Brody noted. “Well...Go ask her then. I’ll be here waiting to hear about it when you get back, okay?”
Violet gave a small, anxious smile. “Aa-aa-aaye aye, c-c-capn,”
It was then the blonde turned behind her, making her way out of the door to Brody’s room, down her steps, and to the front door. It was still drizzling outside, though thankfully not enough to require an umbrella. She pushed out the door, making her way down the stairs and being careful to not fall, scurrying over to the brunette’s porch and huddling under the cover of it. Her hand paused in front of the door, anxious thoughts weaving through her thoughts enough to make her hand lower.
She would stutter. She would ruin it. Say it wrong. Clementine would reject her. Break up with her. It’d be over.
She glanced over her shoulder at a loud pounding on a window, only to see Brody at her window, giving her a thumbs up and a grin. She turned around, taking a shaky breath, and knocking on the door.
It wasn’t long before the brunette answered, pajamas on and hair tied up.
“...Violet..?” She questioned, eyebrows furrowed. “W...What’re you doing here? Not that Im complaining,” She quickly corrected.
“I...U-uhm..” Violet glanced down at the concrete porch, taking a deep breath. She should’ve gotten her flowers. Something special. A ring. Something.
“What’s wrong?” Clementine frowned, taking a step out onto the porch to grab the girl’s hand. “You..You know you can talk to me, right…?”
“N-no, I m-mm-I mean, y-yes I know. I-” She paused, inhaling, and turning to look Clementine in the face. “Will, you, g-go to, P-Pp-Ppp-” oh, fuck. “P-ppp-p-” Violet took a deep breath, heart pounding. Just say it. Spit it out. Say it. “P-pr-pr-” She failed to notice the knowing look the brunette gave her as her head tilted a bit, face relaxing in realization. Her thumb brushed over the blonde’s knuckles.
“Deep breaths. Fidgeting helps, remember.”
Violet glanced to her with puppy like eyes, clenching her free hand and taking a shaky breath. “W-will you, go, to p-prom, w-ww-with, me?” She sputtered, speaking with a stop between almost every word.
Clementine couldn’t help but grin. “I’d love to.”
Violet’s heart was in her throat. “Really??”
“Well, how I could I watch you go through all that and say no…?” She joked, only to receive a punch to her shoulder. “Ow! I’m kidding!”
A brief moment of silence fell over the two as they gave each other loving eyes, before Clementine frowned slightly. “You know you didn’t have to ask me...I was going to ask you,” She questioned.
“Y-Yyou told L-Lo-Louis ab-about it. W-ww-wa-wanting to bb-bbb-b-be a-asked.” She answered.
Clementine shook her head. “I meant being asked as in wanting to have someone to go with. Wanting to go with someone, to ask someone. You, Vi. But, I do appreciate it. You did really good, yknow,”
Violet frowned. “I m-messed up on the p-p.”
“But you got it out. You were nervous. I’m proud of you.”
Violet gave a small grin, only to giggle as she was attacked with kisses. “C-Cc-clem!”
Clementine continued to shower her face in kisses, pulling back and grinning at her. “I love you,”
Violet smiled. “I ll-I lo- I love you t-too.”
Clementine hummed contently, before glancing up to her neighbors house. “Do you wanna go see if Brody wants to come over? I was just about to watch a movie?”
Violet glanced behind her to see the curtains in Brody’s window moving, suggesting she had been watching. “Y-yy-yes,”
Clementine grinned, kissing her again, and pulling away. “Go put your pajamas on! I wanna cuddle,”
