It was too dark.

Even with the hallway light on, too dark.

Someone was going to show up in the hallway. The doorway. Something.

Clementine fought to keep her eyes on the door, only to find herself rolling over and getting up.

No. No, she couldn't be getting up. She wouldn't. It was the middle of the night, for crying out loud. She had to stay and watch the doorway. Watch it so nothing came through.

Wait. She hasn't fallen asleep, has she? Surely not, she wouldn't have allowed herself to. But here she was. Asleep. She fought to drag her eyes back to the door, roll over, anything to get it in her view again.

She could see in her peripheral as the doorway darkened.

Something was there.

Someone.

She needed to wake up, needed to watch the doorway. Make sure both her and Violet were safe and-

Clementine shot up out of bed, breathing ragged as her eyes bore into the doorway.

No shadow.

No ‘thing’.

They were safe. She glanced over to the sleeping blonde next to her, making sure to take note as her chest rose and fell with each breath. She was okay.

Clementine practically flopped back onto the bed, sighing as she turned on her side, watching the hallway.

What other choice did she have?

Something was going to be there, and she had to make sure the both of them were safe. Even if all she really wanted was to curl up into Violet in that moment.

She found herself starting to think. And, yes, maybe her thinking had started to get a little bit odd. As in, why in the world would she be thinking about Louis in a bunny costume at the carnival? Or Aasim selling lollipops for exactly three pieces of candy corn?

No, she wasn't thinking. She was dreaming. Again.

She couldn't dream, much less about something as insignificant as this. She needed to wake up. Wake up, wake-

She startled herself awake again, weakly staring at the hallway. She wasn't going to get much sleep.

Her eyes drifted over, catching the blonde's sleeping form once again. She was okay.

Speaking of okay however, Clementine rolled onto her back, releasing a whiny sigh. It was really hot in their room. The heater was closed, and she was in shorts, so why was she burning up?

After minutes of waiting for her body temperature to cool down, Clementine sighed. It wasn't working. She scratched at the neck of her long sleeve tee, before sitting up again and pulling it off.

She didn't really care. As far as she was concerned, Violet probably had the mental image of her naked burned into her head already. Besides, it was way too warm. Her skin felt sticky and moist, and she couldn't get her breathing under control.

It was calm this late at night. Or, actually, early in the morning. Her eyes traveled over to their nightstand, squinting to read the clock. 3:47AM.

She rolled back onto her side, slumping into the bed, and sighing. Surely, closing her eyes for just a second wouldn't hurt.

She was wrong.

“What do you guys want for food?” Louis questioned, stepping into the room with a bag of chips in hand.

“You're already eating.” Aasim scoffed.

Violet narrowed her eyes at the brown haired boy. “Is that my bag of chips?”

Louis pursed his lips, lifting another one to his mouth and taking a bite. “...what bag of chips?”

“I'm gonna kick your fucking ass,”

Brody rolled her eyes. When had she gotten there? “Alright, but y'all gotta watch the door,”

“What?”

“Watch the door,” She shook her head.

Clementine moved her eyes to said door, only to find the shadow standing there once more.

No, it couldn't.

It can't.

She had to watch it.

Wake up, and watch it.

She needed to-

“What's wrong??”

Clementine hadn't even realized she had jolted awake again, this time stirring the girl next to her as well.

“Clem? What's wrong?”

She turned to meet Violet's gaze, not fully registering the quiver of her own lip. “The door,”

Violet furrowed her eyebrows, grabbing her hand. “What about the door?”

Clementine whimpered, shaking her head. “I have to watch it. Something's- Someone's there, I have to watch it.”

Violet frowned, slouching her shoulders. She squeezed the brunette's hand, before untucking herself from the sheets and padding into the hallway.

“Violet you-” Clementine was cut off as the blonde walked out of her sight.

She needed to go after her.

She needed to protect her.

Keep her safe, make sure she was okay-

“There's nothing in the hallway, Clem,” Violet assured, padding back into the room and climbing back into bed.

Clementine shook her head. “No, no there's going to be. It-”

“-then I'll scare it off,” Violet assured, moving forwards and hugging her from behind. Was she going to question why she was burning up, or why she wasn't wearing a shirt? No. That could be saved until later.

“...but-” Clementine stopped herself, before sighing and turning around, hugging Violet tightly. “Promise?”

“I promise, Clem,”

Clementine relaxed, curling into the blonde, and sighing. “Be careful,”

Violet closed her eyes. “I will,”

-

“No, Brody,” Violet glanced into their bedroom, phone in hand. “She was up all night. Nightmares, I think. She's burning up; might have a fever,”

Her eyes trailed over the brunette's exposed collarbones and shoulders, slick with sweat. “Naw, we should be okay. I know. We love you too. Alright, I'll text you when she wakes up. Alright. Alright, love you too.”
