Chapter 5: Gunshot

Kim freezes when she gets to Adam and Lynn. She can't look. She doesn't want to know. She's crying and screaming but she can't move. Antonio has a hold of her, trying to keep her upright. Everyone is yelling. The world looks like a blur to her. She can't concentrate. There's sirens in the background, someone else must have called in the gunshot. All she can see is blood. The team is leaning over Adam and Lynn. Everyone's face is pale. Then there's movement and a cough.

"Who is it?! Who is moving?!", Kim screams.
Voight walks over to her. Puts his hands on her shoulders.
"Breathe Kim. It's going to be okay. You're going to be okay," he says.
"Tell me who was shot!," Kim screams. She's barely holding it together.
She can see Jay reach down to check a pulse on whoever is laying on top. When the man on top stands up.
"please let it be Adam",Kim says between the tears and shaky breaths.
The man turns around.
"I'm okay darlin, I'm okay," Adam says.
Kim falls to the ground, Antonio couldn't stop her. She's still crying. Adam quickly walks over to her.

"Hey. Hey. I'm okay. See" he wiped blood off of his face. "It's not mine darlin. It's not mine". Kim pulls him into a hug.
"I thought it was you. I heard the shot and saw the blood," Kim replied. Not letting go of him.
"You scared me baby. Don't ever do that again",she added. She realized what she had said and let him go. Adam startled,pulled back.

"Damn man, you scared us all", Kev said giving Adam a bro hug. Antonio and Jay nodded in agreement.
"Glad you're alright", Upton added.
Voight shake Adams hand," I'm glad you're okay ruzek".

The coroner pulls up to take care of Lynn's body while Adam talks with IA about the shooting. It's obviously a clean shoot. Kim is sitting down leaned against the car just taking in everything that just happened when Kev comes over sits next to her.

"You alright burgess?" He asks.
"Yeah. I um. God i thought he was dead Kev. I really did", Kim says crying again.
"I know. We all did too. But he's okay and so are you," he replies.
"I don't know what I would've done if Adam died. It's like I saw my whole life without him. I can't live without him", Kim adds.
"I know that. You need to tell him that. What's more romantic than a near death experience to bring you back together?," he responds. Kim nods and watches Adam. He notices her looking at him and waves. He pats the detective on the shoulder and walks over to Kim and Kev.

"This is my cue to leave," Kev says. Adam nods at him and sits beside Burgess.
"Hey", he says.
"Hey", Kim replies.
"I'm sorry I scared you. The gunshot was loud and I think I blacked out for a few. I wasn't even sure which one of us was hit until Jay checked my pulse," Adam explains.
"I understand. I just um... the thought of losing my undercover partner was a lot to bear", Kim lies. Why didn't I tell him the truth?
"Oh yeah, undercover partners", Adam replies slightly hurt. Why call me baby? Was it a stress reaction?

"Let's head back to the district team", voight says.
Everyone nods and gets in their cars. It's silent between Adam and Kim as they drive back. Both lost in their thoughts.

They're the last to arrive and go straight to the locker room. Adam needs out of the bloody clothes. Kim heads to her locker, but suddenly stops.
"What is it Kim? You okay?", Adam asks concerned.
"I lied. I'm sorry. I wasn't scared to lose you as my undercover partner", she explains.
"Gee you know how to make a guy feel special", Adam laughs though it hurt him.
"No I mean um I mean", Kim stutters. "Ah screw it" she adds.

She steps forward, grabs Adams face and kisses him. Instantly his hands are on her waist kissing back. Trying to feel all of her. Getting lost in each other. They only stop when they can't breathe anymore. Adam leans his forehead against hers.

"I was scared because I thought I lost you for good",Kim whispers, still trying to catch her breath.
Adam kisses her forehead,"you didn't lose me darlin. I'm right here".
