Burzek Goes Undercover

Chapter 8: Recovery

It's been 3 days since Kim was shot. They have stopped the sedation medicine to bring her out of the come, but she has not yet woken up. Her body still needs the rest. Adam has yet to leave her side. The team and Platt have taken turns sitting with Adam and Kim. They want to make sure Adam is eating and sleeping. He's been neglecting himself.

Platt isn't much better than Adam. She'd never admit to it but Burgess has always been one of her favorites. It's hard for her to see Kim like that and not be able to help. When she was hurt Kim was in the hospital caring for her and she just wants to repay the favor. She knows by taking care of Adam, she's helping Kim. Adam is her world, even if she doesn't always want to admit that truth.

Kim starts to stir, Adam and Trudy both perk up at the moment. They look at each other making they didn't imagine feeling her move. Kim squeezes their hands.

"Darlin, Hey. Wake up", Adam says.
"Mmm", Kim groans.

She opens her eyes and it's so bright. Her head hurts and her leg feels almost numb. Holy crap did I lose my leg?! Was her first thought. Adam sees how panicked she looks.

"You're okay. You were shot in the thigh. They had to do surgery but you're going to make a full recovery," Adam says reassuringly.
Kim nods and turns her head to see who is holding her other hand.

"Hey Burgess, glad you're awake," Platt says.
"How long have I been asleep", Kim asks.
"3 days", Trudy responds.

Kim can't believe it's been three days. All she remembers is being on a date with Adam, gunshots going off, getting hit, and the occasional voice at the bedside while in her coma.

"Is everyone else from the restaurant okay?", Kim asks.
"Only one was killed, it looks like that was the primary target. The team is working on tracking them down. They have some solid leads thanks to the pod right outside the restaurant", Adam explains.

Kim nods. Relieved there was not a lot of victims. It could have been a lot worse than what it was. She's thankful she's alive and that her leg is still intact. She's extremely thankful that Adam wasn't hurt. She can't even think about that, that would have broken her if the roles were reversed.

"Let me go and get Will," Trudy says.
Adam nods in agreement. He leans down and kisses Kim, it feels so good to finally have her kiss him back.

"Sorry I ruined our date", Kim says sadly.
"You didn't ruin our date babe. The gunman did. Besides it just gives a reason to go on another," Adam says with a wink. This make Kim laugh.

"I hear our patient is awake," Will says walking into the room. " how are you feeling?".
"My head is pounding from these lights and my leg feels numb," Kim responds.
"That's all perfectly normal. You've been asleep for a few days so it's going to take your eyes a few days to adjust. I'll ask the nurse to bring you in some Tylenol for the headache. Your leg is numb due to the nerve blocker we gave you. We didn't want you to wake up in a lot of pain. We will manage that pain medication now that you are awake and can express pain", Will explains.
"Sounds like a plan doc. Thank you for everything ", Kim states.
"No problem. You're a good cop and work with my brother he wasn't going to let me do anything less than my best", Will adds.
Kim laughs. It's moments like this that makes her team her family. They would do anything to make sure everyone goes home every night.

Voight and the team all show up to her room several hours later with food for everyone.

"Hey guys. Thank you for everything you did while I was out", Kim says with a smile.
"That's what families do", Antonio says.
"We got them. The punks that did this. They're facing life", Voight tells Adam and Kim as he takes her hand.
"Thank you Srg. I'm not even going to ask 5 minutes with them because I'm sure you'll say no and it wouldn't help Kim," Adam states.
"Plus they are already at statesville" Jay adds.
"We brought food for everyone", Kev chimes in.
"We thought it'd be nice to have a family dinner", Upton adds.

Kim is overwhelmed with all the love. She truly doesn't know what she would do if she didn't have this team. They are her backbone and reason for going on every day.

"Hey so I was thinking ", Adam says once everyone has left or the evening.
"Oh this should be good," Kim says jokingly.
"Just you shouldn't be alone with you get out. You should stay with me", Adam says nervously. He doesn't want to let Kim out of his sight.
"I really just wanna be back in my bed", Kim states.
"Oh okay", Adam says hurt. He starts to pull away when Kim grabs his arm.
"Which means I would like you to stay with me", Kim adds.
"Why didn't you start with that?", Adam says shaking his head.
"I've missed 3 days of making you sweat," Kim saying laughing.
"Of course I'll stay darlin", Adam says kissing her forehead.

After another 3 days in the hospital. Kim is finally discharged. They stop at Adam place before heading to hers so he can pick up what he's going to need for the next few weeks.

When they arrive they find the entire team in Kim's living room waiting for them.

"Welcome home!" They all yell.
"Thank you guys!!" Kim says surprised.
"We bought you guys some quick meals so you don't have to cook a lot", Kev explains.
"Thanks man", Adam adds.

Their phones all ring, they know they just caught a case.

"Adam sit this one out and get Kim settled", voight says.
"Thank you Srg," Adam says.

They head out leaving Kim and Adam alone. They make their way to the couch and cuddle into each other. Happy to finally be home.
