Chapter 7: The Date

Kim showers and works on picking out an outfit. She doesn't want to seem like she's trying to hard but she wants to look nice for Adam. That's when it catches her eye, the dress she wore on their very first date. How perfect. She just finishes zipping it up when there's a knock at her door. Her hearts starts to pound at the thought of dating Adam again. She's nervous but mainly excited. She opens the door.

"Hey Dar-", he starts," wow! You look absolutely stunning". As he looks her up and down. There's something familiar about that dress.
"You look handsome yourself. Let me slip on my shoes and I'll be ready to go", Kim replies.
Adam takes this moment to observe her. He can't get over how damn beautiful she looks in that dress and how she doesn't even realize it.

They get to the restaurant and he just can't keep his eyes off of her. She's absolutely stunning in that dress. Kim blushes when she sees how Adam is looking at her. It's intense.

"Is that a new dress?" Adam asks.
"No it's not. Why?," Kim responds.
"It just looks familiar. Like I've seen it before somewhere ", he says.
"That's because you have," she responds with smirk. Adam thinks about it for a minute when a lightbulb goes off in his mind.
"I've seen you in it before. Our very first date. Right?", adam asks.
"You're right. I just thought it'd be a nice touch to wear it again", Kim says.
"I like it even more now that i know the meaning of it," Adam responds as he takes Kim's hand.

They order and make small talk until the food comes out. They have so much to talk about but neither one of them knows how to start that conversation. Kim decides its time to explain.

"Okay. The other day when I thought you were shot, I saw my whole life flash before my eyes. My life without you in it. I don't know what I would have done. It made me realize how much I need you in my life. I don't mean just as undercover partners. I miss you Adam. I wish I never called off the wedding," Kim says with a sadness in her eyes.

"I miss you too Kim. I couldn't imagine my life without you in it. I thought you still had feelings for me, but I didn't want to jeopardize our working relationship by bringing it up. Now, I wish I had so I could have been with you sooner. I have to ask, why did you call it off?" Adam says with the same sadness.

"Looking back, I think a lot of it was Romans manipulation. He made me think that you didn't want to marry me. That you couldn't commit and that's why you've been engaged before but never married them. I think it was because he wanted me to be with him and not you. God I wish I would've realized that before I gave the ring back. It was, no it is, my biggest regret ", Kim says as a tear escapes her eyes.

" Don't cry babe. Yes I wish you would have came to me and talked to me about your concerns. I wish I was married to you right now. Maybe we needed the time apart to realize just how much we want each other. I'm determined to do everything I can to keep you this time. I still lo-" Adam gets cut off by gunshots in the background.

Him and Kim immediately stand up and pull out their weapons.
"Every get down!", Kim yells.
There's screaming and crying all over the restaurant.
Adam calls 911 "this is officer Adam Ruzek of intelligence, we have shots fired at 2725 Michigan ave. Be advised plain clothed officers on the scene"

Him and Kim move to the kitchen where the gunshots have came from. Kim sees a man with a gunshot wound, she tells the lady next to him to keep pressure on it.
Adam still on the phone with 911 says "roll an ambulance we have at least one gunshot victim".

They turn the corner to the kitchen and another shot goes off, this time directed to them.
Kim screams out in pain," I've been hit!!".
"Kim!!." Adam yells as he puts pressure on her leg wound.
"Adam go. Get these guys. Give me your belt to tie around my leg. Be safe." Kim states.
Adam is hesitant to leave her but knows he has to clear the kitchen. He gives her his phone and kiss on the cheek.
"Shots fired at the police officer down. I repeat officer down. Send an ambulance. I've been hit in the leg" Kim tells the operator.

Each member of them had there radios on and heard the message go out, they each recognized Kim's voice and headed straight to the restaurant.

Voight is the first to arrive, he lives the closest. He spots Kim right away and goes to her.
"Kim are you alright?!" He asks.
"Yes I'm fine. Adam needs back up. He's clearing the kitchen alone. At least two shooters". She tells him.
Voight nods and heads into the kitchen.

The rest of the teams rolls in and clears the restaurant. Kev stayed with Kim until the paramedics got there. The shooters were in the wind. 4 people including Kim were injured and one was shot dead execution style.

"This was a targeted hit. It was sloppy though, they shot even if the person wasn't in the way.", Jay says.
"Kim! Where's Kim?!," Adam comes out of the kitchen yelling.
"She's with the paramedics. I'll drive you to med", Jay tells him. He nods and they head out the door while the rest of the team processes the scene.

Jay calls ahead to med and asks for his brother Will," Hey Burgess was shot and I need you to care for her. Upper thigh lots of blood loss. I'm not sure if she's conscious she's in the ambo with Brett".
"They just radioed in, ETA is 3 mins. I'll take her case. I'll do everything I can Jay", Will responds.

Jay hangs up and turns to Adam, "you holding up okay?"
"This is the second time she's been shot! I was right there. She has to be okay," Adam says. He's an absolute wreck.
" We know Burgess is tough. My brother is gonna treat her. This isn't on you Adam. There's nothing you could have done", Jay says trying to comfort Adam.

They get to the hospital minutes after the ambulance did and head straight to the ER to find Will.

Will spots them," She's lost a lot of blood and needs surgery. The bullet hit her femoral artery. We need to get in there and stop the bleeding. We will update when we can".
"Please save her please," Adam begs. " can I see her?".
"Just for a minute", Will agrees.
"Hey darlin it's me, I love you come back to me", Adam says crying.

Jay and Adam go to the waiting room where Adam can't stop pacing. The rest of the team joins them and Jay explains that Burgess is having surgery.

"I know we all want to stay here but we need to find the punks who did this to her. It's what she would want. Jay you stay here with Adam, he shouldn't be alone," Voight tells the team.
Jay nods in agreement. Voight walks up to Adam.

"Keep us updated when you find anything out. Jay is going to stay with you," Voight tells Adam.
"I just need her to be okay. I love her Srg., I'm sorry", Adam responds. He knows voight isn't a fan of in house romance.
"Don't worry about that now. Let's get her better first", voight says shaking Adams hand.

It's been 3 hours since Kim went back from surgery. The team is checking pod cameras to see if they caught a visual of who did the shooting.

Will and Dr. Rhodes come out to the waiting room both looking pale and tired. They walk up to Adam and Jay.
"She lost a lot of blood. We did everything we could for her. We got the bullet her. Then we placed her in a medically induced coma. Her body is weak and needs to rest. We will no more in 24 hours", Dr. Rhodes explains.
Adam nods and shake his hand.
"Give us 30 mins to get her settled in the ICU and you can go visit," Will adds.
"Thank you both", Jay says.

He calls Voight to let the team know that Burgess is out of surgery before taking Adam to the ICU.
