"Don't you know what this means?" My mother spat at me, venom filling her voice. I glared at her through my thick brown hair.
She took a threatening step towards me, her face welling red in anger. She waved the letter in my face expecting me to say something.
"I'm fully aware, I am in that letter," I stated bluntly which seemed to piss her off even more and she threw the letter at me. I watched unbothered as the piece of paper floated and swiftly landed on the tiled floor.
She let out a frustrated groan and ran a clenched first through her hair, clawing out some of her dark brown curls along with it.
"Why do you do this to me, Ren?" She whispered to me quietly, using my nickname to somewhat guilt me. Here come the tears, I thought to myself and as if on cue her eyes welled up and soon enough tears sprang from her eyes as she made a hurried exit into her room, where she would more than likely stay for the rest of the night.
I sighed aggravated and slumped down into the armchair. I looked down at the letter which laid spread out beside my feet. Slowly, I picked it up and read it for the third time today. Just reading the words made my blood run hot in pure temper.
Dear parent/guardian of Miss L Martlow,
I am regretfully writing to inform you of your child's continuous absent and lateness to all of her classes. However, whenever she decides to show up she will cause disruption throughout the class room, effecting other student's learning.
I scoffed to myself at that part. Regretfully writing? I think not. That school knew I didn't fit in, they wanted me out as soon as I stepped foot in the place. Highgate Elite was full of privileged egotistical arseholes, both teachers and students. I was lower class, beneath them in their eyes, so they treated me like it. Now they wanted to punish me for acting like it?
Due to earlier's incident, involving unexpected violence with two of our pupils we have no choice but to expell Lauren. Please recognise this as our last resort, we have tried to encourage Lauren to enjoy her time at our top school but to no avail. Alternative education has been arranged, effective immediately she will now attend Oakwood Local and therefore will not be allowed to enter school premises again. Lauren's school records have been sent over to Oakwood already and they have accepted her enrolment to start tomorrow.
If any attempt to come back to our school is made we have the right and duty to call local authorities not only to protect ourselves but our pupils too.
Sorry for it to come to this.
Mrs Alderman.
Head of Highgate upper school.
I groaned out in frustration and ripped the letter in two. The spoke about me like I was some rabid dog, who needed that shitty private school anyway? I didn't belong there, the only reason I was able to go was because my Dad died and left a shit ton of life insurance money.
I angrily screwed up the letter and chucked it across the room, watching as it landed neatly in the bin. That was where that school belonged.
I sat up, faintly able to hear my mother's sobs. I would of felt bad if I knew she was crying over me but she wasn't. She was crying over my father. He died when I was only 5, of course I was devastated but my mother took it hard. It had been almost 12 years and yet she still cries over him like he had just died yesterday. It wasn't normal, I tried talking to her about it but she would always snap "I loved him, leave it" and so I left it. I offered once or twice about getting her help but she didn't listen only said I would understand one day.
But what did that mean? I wouldn't spend my lousy life crying over a man. I had no plans on landing myself a boyfriend, not that I couldn't, I just wasn't interested. All the boys at Highgate Elite seemed to have a stick shoved up their arse, they only paid attention to the girls who wore short skirts and crop tops. Easy targets is what I overheard them calling them and I wasn't one.
