Jay's P.O.V
I couldn't help but watch her while my phone continued to play mindless videos. I didn't exactly know when she fell asleep but since I noticed I haven't taken my eyes off her. She looked so peaceful snuggled into me with her dark silky hair sprawled across my chest.
I couldn't imagine the trauma she had been through. Her mother, Dawn was like a zombie most days and barely managed to take care of Lauren throughout her childhood. Even now, the emotional support I could see Lauren needed from her mum was not there and never had been.
It was true, Lauren had a short temper but she also had a heart of gold. I saw the way she was with Ems, Lauren only cared for a few people and I was lucky I was one of them.
I couldn't remember when I had became interested in her making her my girl but it was like I could be myself around her and that we would never get bored of each other.
I knew she only thought of me as a brother but I hopped I could easily change her mind if only she would let herself.
I knew she felt the pull to, I knew what it was the moment I turned at 16. It had always been there but when the transformation happened everything about her heightened. Her scent, her honey brown eyes, her voice, everything about her effected me in ways I never thought possible. I couldn't nor wanted to stay away.
It made me understand my parents so much more. They were mated and had been since they were 16. Since then they had only ever spent a few hours away from each other and I understood why now. It was actually physically painful for our kind to stay away from our other half and it only got worse when you marked your mate.
I hated keeping these secrets from her but it was her mother's order. The last one she made as Luna before she stepped down and allowed my parents to run the pack so it was honoured.
Dawn was human whereas Nicholas, Rens dad, was an alpha were-wolf. It wasn't unheard of to have a human mate but it became tricky when off-spring of the two species occurred. It was known that children of both species weren't guaranteed to shift, that if they were to shift it would be at the age of 18, much later than usual in our culture. It was rumoured this was because they had to fight either human or wolf gene out before it became apparent what they were.
Dawn wanted to keep Ren and our kind separate in case Ren didn't turn and she could lead a normal human life. That was the reason Ren was sent to Highgate in the first place, our pack all went to Oasis, even some of the teachers were our members.
Tomorrow, she would start and be overcome with people wanting to know her. She was a mystery to them, the alphas daughter that had been hid away all these years. That's one of the reasons I told her to stick with me.
I sat there thinking about this for a while just staring at her beautiful face as she slept.
A crash snapped me out of my thoughts and I instantly motioned my head towards the door. I looked between Lauren and the door for a second debating whether to go investigate or not.
I crept out of the bed desperately trying not to wake her up as I tipped toed silently down the dark hallway, I could hear voices coming from the living room.
I took in a deep breath and peeked around the crack in the door that was half open. Lauren's mom Dawn was sat lazily on her couch with a bottle of vodka in her hand, you could tell by the whiff coming from the room and the look of her she was drunk.
I hesitated for a second ready to go in and help her to bed but then a man came into the room and a women shortly followed behind.
I glanced more closely and gasped, it was my mom and dad. What were they doing here? I told them were I was.
I was going to walk in if it wasn't for what my mother said next. "Dawn, your drunk," She said stepping forward so she was in line with my dad.
"Again," My farther added.
"No shit," Dawn slurred as she giggled. My mom and dad exchanged looks as if they were having a private convocation between each other.
"Hey," I heard Ren whisper next to me and I jumped to see her grinning at me in amusement. "What's going-" I cut her off by putting a hand over her mouth.
"Shh," I hissed at her as she glared at me but nodded. I let my hand off her mouth and we both peeked round the door.
"Still part of the pack you know, I can hear you," She snapped followed by another drunken giggle. I heard Ren curse under her breathe.
"Dawn it's been 15 years, you need to be stronger for not your sake but for Laurens," My mom said stepping towards Dawn with concern.
"It's alright for you to say, you still have your mate!" Dawn spat at her angrily glaring between my mom and my dad.
"Dawn, maybe we should keep Lauren at our house, just for short term, to get yourself sorted, of course she can come back whenever she wants but it upsets her to see you like this," My dad said approaching her so he could be closer to my mom.
A tear slid down Dawn's cheek as she looked away from their eyes. She gazed longingly at the window into space deep in thought.
"Dawn," My mom said putting a hand on her knee as my mother bent down in front of her. Dawn snapped her attention back at my mom and looked into her eyes as if she was studding her.
She looked back at the window and then to my dad and finally back to my mom. She slowly gave a short nod while another tear rolled down her cheek.
"I'm so sorry," She whimpered looking down in her lap at the bottle of vodka. She took another gulp of vodka to somewhat comfort herself.
"We know," My dad said and my mom shot him a warning look. She looked back at Dawn and wiped a tear away from her cheek taking the bottle from her hands and laying it on the floor.
"She's in safe hands," She reassured her and Dawn nodded weakly and laid down. My mum grabbed a blanket and placed it over her along with a few pillows under her head.
"Let's go," My dad said motioning my mother to follow him. She nodded and got up stopping halfway.
"Maybe we should go check on them?" She asked him and my dad paused for a moment as if he was thinking.
"What if-" My dad said but my mom cut him off by putting her hand up.
"Let's go," She said turning towards the door.
I pulled back instantly just missing my mom's eyes for a split second. Shit we had to get back into Ren's room before they found out we had been listening and by the looks of it, this wasn't a normal parent to parent conversation, I didn't know how I would explain this to Lauren.
I dragged Ren back into her bedroom just fast enough to hear my mother creaking the living room door open.
