-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I knocked on the door a second time in a row.
'Go away! I am not in!'
Clearly...
'Come on Lynette! Open the door! I need to talk to you.' I whined leaning my forehead on the wood. She had locked herself in her room since Hawk had left and was sulking on her own. That was never a good thing; she must be planning something, probably his murder but I could take none of that. I needed him and I needed to pull myself together for Lola.
Footsteps sounded on the other side and then the door was yanked open, causing me to stagger. She grabbed me from the nape, dragged me to the chair and sat me down forcefully.
'What's with all the violence?'
'Shut up.' she snapped pacing in the room.
'I just found out that Lola was murdered. Is that why you were so sad?'
I hung my head my fingers fidgeting. Oh, yeah. I forgot to inform anyone of our recent discovery.
'I went to see Steve, he works for Hawk by the way, and when I left him, Jones intercepted me. We went to a house we thought that Brewer was residing. We searched the entire place and at first, we found traces of a struggle. She did a pretty good job maiming that bastard, there was a lot of blood spatter. We followed the trail upstairs and she...' my voice caught in my throat in remembrance 'that's where we found her.'
She kept pacing slowly, rubbing her chin the cogs on her brain working relentlessly.
'What the hell was Hawk doing here?' she narrowed her gaze at me.
'Well, apparently to check up on me?' I shrugged my shoulders. Really, even I didn't know what that man had in his brain.
'You better keep him away from me.'
I should. I need him alive for the time being.
'We caught the one who was about to clean her corpse.'
She stopped and leaned on my chair her eyes boring into mine, silently commanding me to answer.
'Hawk has him at the inn and interrogates him, right now. It was Fulton.'
Her eyes went blank.
'So that means...' she stood and put her hands on her hips, her eyes closing as she pinched the bridge of her nose.
'Yes, Lynette.' I confirmed her thoughts. She let out a struggled breath and looked up.
'Can Hawk smuggle you out of town?'
'I could try to stir him away, using Garrett. He seems far more interested in him than the assassin.'
'Let us worry about getting you out, before worrying about him finding out the truth.'
'Should I go, find out as much as I can?' and go back to him?
She nodded 'I... will take care of Lola.' she raked a hand on her face and shooed me out.
I steeled myself with as much bravado to face Fulton and off I went back to the inn. There was no way I was letting him go unpunished this time. No matter how much my heart still ached.I entered the quiet inn in the middle of the night, dressed again as a man, just to keep up appearances. Half the men were probably out on patrol, while the others were getting a little sleep for their next shift.
