When we rounded the curb I felt my breath leave my lungs in a rush. My heart started beating erratically and my palms felt sweatier than they ever had before. The hairs at my nape rose, I was doused in cold sweat and I barely managed to stay on my horse. The knowing claws of dread scratched at my back making me shudder at whom I was about to see.
Suddenly all my bravado had gone in flames and the only thing that kept me in place were the riders that surrounded me. I would have fled in a heartbeat and I wouldn't have looked back; That is how much I feared that man and I hadn't even laid eyes on him yet.
I felt the drops of perspiration catching in my chemise dampening me on the inside. The corset around my ribs felt like an inescapable cage, choking me. My lips parted involuntarily as I silently gasped for air. I didn't want anyone noticing my distress, especially not Gerard. A lot depended on me right now and I would not let my fear get the best of me.
Focus, Foxy, focus! You are brave, you are strong, you are...Oh.
It's only Wyatt.
I sagged in relief. Air escaped me and I quickly composed myself before someone noticed my actions. It was a good thing that the Colonel wasn't there right?
We stopped in the middle of the road each of our riders facing the opposite ones. Wyatt waited mounted on his horse unmistakably tired and by the sight of his purple eyes, sleepless. Placed in the middle of his eight men, outnumbered by our twelve but the man dared to look cool as a cucumber.
There was a moment of silence as the men began their pissing contest.
'We can end this right now. No one else needs to die. We can't let the public know about this little conflict. Not for the sake of a girl' Wyatt broke the silence first.
Gerard stayed quiet watching him intently and probably skewering him with his gaze. I bet my right sole his black eye was uttering death threats right now and incinerating him with its gloom.
Wyatt squirmed a little on his seat and licked his lips. His eyes momentarily falling on me and then darting back to Gerard.
'I didn't betray ya for this, man. Ya have to know this. They threatened me. I had to do it. Just give me the girl and ya go free, I swear. She is all they want and I can lie to cover up your escape. Go back to the good side of London, get married and don't think a second longer about this. What is done is done. This is the end.' Wyatt continued.
I heard a clucking sound and surmised its was Gerard making a show considering his words. The bloody bastard! Wyatt was deluded if he thought that Gerad would ever consider giving me up and going back to his manor and live happily ever after with another woman!
I couldn't help but smirk at how audacious my man was. He would trample that man and the Colonel himself if got the chance to save me.
I knew it, deep within me. He would never betray me, never give me up. I was priceless to him.
And I felt the same for him.
I understood my feelings now. A sudden clarity hit me in the night while I lay in that mans arms made me realise just how much in love I was. How I knew my life would never feel whole again without him. How I could never sleep in the bed alone again, never put on a dress and not feel him skim his fingers on my flesh, a prelude to all the tender and hidden touches he would bestow on me during the day.
