WHEN YOU LOST ME

❝ i'm not losing you,
you're losing me.
you'll search for me inside
of everyone you'll be with,
but i won't be found. ❞

True love, it's an inspiration
True love, it's so hard to find.
True love, if I could get it back,
I'd never let it go this time.

I held her close, whispering the words of the beautiful song into her gentle ears.

True love, I'd never let it go...

She clasped my hand, her face flushed as she twirled me around gently. A lovestruck expression climbed her face as my [h/c] hair expanded out, lightly brushing against her cheeks.

I'd never let it go...

Her tinkling laughter filled the abandoned hallway as she was pulled into my warm arms, swaying gently to the beat existing in our heads, the only thing to us, perfectly in sync.

This time...

She stopped dead suddenly, eliciting a puzzled look from me as I was forced to halt as well. [e/c] pierced cognac as our eyes met, and for a moment nothing existed but us.

"I'd never let it go...this time" She sang softly, smiling as as my face filled with lust, my eyes fluttering shut as I gently hooked my arms around her shoulders, pleading her to come closer.

"True love..."

My [h/c] hair molded into golden as she leant in, inches of space between our lips...

A sudden scuffle pulled us apart just as she was about to close the gap. Alerted by the activity, I (more reflexively than willingly) pulled away instantly and let my eyes travel around the length of the room.

"[y/n]? Is there a problem?" rang out the sad voice belonging to my blond lover, and I gave a small nod.

"It's- it's all perfect, Eddy" I smiled dazzlingly, my fingers reaching out to intertwine with Edlynne's for a brief moment. "I...I have to go. I'll be back in a few minutes, alright?"

"Oh. OK" Edlynne expressed with a loose sigh. Locking my eyes on Edlynne's obviously disappointed expression, I hesitated, but with a terse nod from her and the memory of what I had glimpsed, I spun around and hurried out of the corridor.

"[c/n] [c/m/n] [c/l/n], if it's what I think, I'm going to kill you" muttered I as I ran, my luscious locks flowing behind me.

And sure enough, there it was. The silky [c/h/c] hair and beautiful [c/e/c] eyes that was all too familiar to me. My heart jumped to my throat. Even after all this time, I could simply not deny how irresistibly good she always looked.

"[y/n]" was her first and only word as I approached her, eyes narrowed dangerously.

"[c/n] [c/l/n]" Lily said coldly. "What are you doing here?"

"I'm on...I'm on an errand" She blurted out. "For-for Professor Lynn. Yeah"

"Oh, really?" I arched a perfect eyebrow. "And what did Professor Lynn tell you to do?"

"To fetch you" [c/n] lied smoothly.

"Funny" I mocked. "I can swear she told me she wouldn't need me for the rest of the day because she was leading Remedial Maths"

And here she hung her head, knowing she had been outwitted. I sighed. I had never been able to hold a grudge against her, and I highly doubted I ever could.

"Why are you really here?"

"..."

"I didn't catch that, [c/n]"

"OK, so maybe I followed you and the annoying blonde here" [c/n] gave a sharp nod in the direction of the hallway I had just exited. I rolled my eyes. "And you decided fit to interrupt our moment?"

"No, I-I" [c/n] blushed bright red. "I just...couldn't watch it. It was disgusting"

I raised an eyebrow again. She always succumbed to pressure, it would not be long before I could crack her open like a nut.

"So maybe I was upset!" [c/n] burst out. "I don't like Thompson, OK?"

The look on my face was far from convinced, but [c/n] simply fell into silence, as if that terse statement would answer the several million questions circling my head. I exhaled again, crossing my arms and taking a step forward.

"[c/n], what truly upsetted you when Edlynne nearly kissed me?" I asked tentatively after the awkward silence, unsure if I wanted to hear the answer. But I needed to. I needed her to tell me what I'd suspected for so long, I needed the confirmation of what I'd predicted since the beginning.

"You know why, [y/n]"

"I want to hear it from your lips, [c/n/n]"

It was the first time I had called her that delectable name in a long, long while. There was silence for a while as [c/n] hung her head in defeat, knowing this was the end of her secret.

"It's because I still have feelings for you"

Silence ensued. I didn't know what to say, even though I'd finally heard what I'd wanted to for so long. For a few moments she just stood there, facing me in shame, knowing she was the reason this whole conversation was taking place.

"We agreed to move on, [c/n]" I spoke finally, a slight waver in my voice. "We agreed that it was...for the best"

"I know, and I tried to move on, [y/n], I really did" pleaded [c/n]. "But...it won't happen. Everyone in my league...just doesn't cut it"

"Doesn't cut it?"

"No, I just...." She sighed, pushing three fingers through her glamorous hair. "I don't know, [y/n]. After being with you, nobody else just...seems enough"

And with that she let her head drop again. Here was [c/n] [c/l/n], the very person who had elicited the end of our on-off relationship, now confessing her undying feelings. I didn't know what to make of this situation, at all.

I let my lips part in the vague hope that something would slip out, but I couldn't say anything. Instead I made another careful step forward.

And then, I took her hands. An electric shock seemed to run down my spine the moment my fingers made contact with hers, a warmth blooming promptly throughout my entire body- a very familiar warmth that I discovered with a start that I craved to no end. Albeit startlet, [c/n] did not hesitate to curl her fingers around mine, and we simply stood there for a while, savoring the feeling of our hands intertwined for what was possibly the last time.

"I had told you this, [c/n]" I leaned over to whisper in her eyes, noticing the way the hairs on her neck stood up as my lips grazed her skin. "I had told you this exact statement that day you broke up with me, saying that lo had gone the spark of our relationship. I had told you - I'm not losing you. You're losing me. You're going to search for me inside of everyone you'll be with, but I won't be found"

She said nothing.

And then I stepped back, and with the warmth was gone any hope we'd ever had. I was done, clinging to a shard of desire, wishing to the stars that she'd come back to my arms. I was ready to leave behind everything [c/n] had given me and taken from me. I knew she felt it too- the feeling of closure, something similar to the impending doom before signing a divorce settlement.

"We're all looking for someone whose demons play well with ours, [c/n/n]" I stated, trying my best not to let my voice crack. "I thought ours did. But it turns out, I don't need another me. I need someone whose going to disagree with everything I say, and balance me out. I need someone who's my polar opposite.

"And guess what, [c/n]? I found her. And this time, she's staying"
