Awaking to the distressed shout of her best friend, followed by a destructive crash was not Klara's choicest way of waking up. Letting out a frustrated noise for being forced up at this ungodly hour, Klara heaved herself off the comfortable mattress, knowing she couldn't trust [c/n] not to break the entire apartment apart.
Tumbling off the bed and pulling herself out of her room, Klara was greeted by the sight of her favorite pink vase shattered on the floor, [c/n] beside it, rummaging feverishly through the drawers while muttering, "Where is it...where is it?"
"[c/n]! My vase!" Klara huffed as she spotted the broken vase. [c/n] barely mumbled out an apology before continuing her angsty search.
"What the fuck happened, [c/n]?" Klara gritted out. "What are you doing turning the house upside down at--" She glanced briefly at the clock on the wall. "-- six in the fucking morning?!"
"My necklace is missing!" [c/n] screeched, startling Klara, whose brow furrowed at the mention of a necklace. She had never particularly labelled [c/n] as someone to possess, much less lose jewelry.
"Necklace?"
"Yes!"
Klara smoothened back her ginger hair confusedly. "What necklace?"
"Klay, you know what necklace!" [c/n] cried in despair. "My half-a-heart necklace, with [y/n]'s initials on it! The one I always wear?"
Klara racked her brain for the memory of such a necklace, but found nothing. However, the fact that it held [c/n]'s girlfriend's initials probably meant that [y/n] had gifted it to [c/n], in which case losing it was not an optimal situation.
"I don't know" Klara confessed. [c/n] groaned loudly, standing from the drawers and rushing to the coffee table, flicking the magazines away and peering into the pot of daisies.
"How do you not know my promise necklace?! Klay, that pendant is the single most important thing I own! And now I can't find it!"
[c/n] collapsed onto the couch, cradling her face within her hands. Klara sighed, turning the coffee machine up.
"Calm down, I'm sure [y/n] would understand-"
"This isn't about [y/n] being disappointed" [c/n] shifted, burying her face into the couch cushions. "Klara, that necklace meant everything to me! It was the last thing [y/n] gave me before she left for [your dream college]"
Klara placed down the mug she had retrieved as the coffee machine went off, noting the desolation in [c/n]'s muffled voice.
"Alright" She sighed through her nose. "I'll help you look for it"
Hours later, every effort seemed futile as Klara and [c/n] turned up empty-handed. [c/n] seemed to be on the brink of a mental breakdown, while Klara was stressed out completely as she surveyed their apartment, which was a huge mess.
"We've looked everywhere!" [c/n] decided, her voice breaking. "Klay, it's gone forever!"
Klara was genuinely surprised to find tears brimming at the corner of [c/n]'s eyes. If [c/n] would shed tears over it's loss then that necklace was more important to her than Klara could imagine.
"[c/n/n], I'm sorry" Klara expressed, placing a comforting hand on [c/n]'s shoulder. "But there's nothing to be done now."
"I guess..." [c/n] trailed away at her words miserably, shaking Klara off and wandering back to her room. The redhead sighed, frankly exhausted from the hunt she had just gone on.
Leaning back, Klara seized one of the couch cushions they had tossed carelessly onto the floor, reaching for the remote control and turning on the television. Hurriedly putting the couch back together, Klara collapsed into the plush, resting her elbow into the couch cushion.
But even as she flipped through the channels, Klara felt the edge of her radius soring as it rested against grit. Sighing in frustration she felt around the cushion with her fingers, startled when they came across a flat disc of cool metal under the cotton pillowcase.
"What the fuck, [c/n]"
. . .
"Don't fret, my love" [y/n]'s angelic voice echoed in Klara's ears as she careened down the hallway to the entrance of [c/n]'s room, the doorway slightly ajar.
"No, [y/n]. You gifted me that necklace with so much love-" [c/n] instantly protested, an angry blush dusting her cheeks. But as Klara readied to intervene, a soft hush of comfort emanated from the screen of [c/n]'s laptop, where Klara barely glimpsed the outline of the [h/c]ette that held [c/n]'s heart.
[c/n] calmed at the small gesture, and Klara pulled back around the doorframe in fear of being discovered. She was astonished at the effect [y/n] had on her energetic best friend. Around [y/n], [c/n] seemed serene, at peace with her heart and soul. Around [y/n], [c/n] was whole.
"[c/n/n], I gave you that necklace because I wanted you to have a piece of me, wherever you went" [y/n] confessed softly in her pixelated Skype form. "I wanted you to remember me in everything you did."
"I do" Klara could just about hear the loving smile in [c/n]'s voice. "I always do. I love you so much, [y/n]"
"I know, baby. I know. I realised that, you don't need a heart with my initials carved into it to remember me. Because I'm always with you, in here"
Klara imagined [y/n] pressing her hand warmly to her chest, right above her heart, and [c/n]'s cheeks heating as silent tears dripped down onto her chin.
Klara sighed, amazed by the love that she could tell the women shared even through a simple conversation. They were made to be together, that Klara knew. She could almost see the red string of fate connecting their fingers, despite being so many miles apart.
"And I'll never leave you. I'll always be with you, until the end of the line. I love you"
"I love you more" [c/n] whispered out, her fingers touching the screen ever so slightly. "I love you 3000" (1)
"I love you infinity" [y/n] smiled, placing her fingers just where [c/n]'s would be. Klara broke a smile, knowing her irresponsible little best friend was in great hands.
And amid her fingers, the sunlight caught the jagged ends of half a metal heart, the letters [f/i], [m/i] and [l/i] embossed over it.

(1): I had to! If you get the reference, I love you. 3000. I'm sorry :(:
