PERFECTLY

❝whatever it takes.❞

oOo

The world is a breathtakingly beautiful place.

Waves crash onto sandy beaches at the edge of the Hawaiian Islands, the summer sun a gleaming ball of diamond against the clear blue sky. And aside, in the night skies of Norway gleams the brilliant Aurora Borealis, turquoise, purple and white on navy blue, looking a picture out of a dream. And not too far is the bustling city of London, it's towers strong and tall in the dewy dawn atmosphere, happy chatter audible as its inhabitants rise and shine for the days ahead.

But, like everything in the universe, beauty too must be balanced by an opposing force. It is a law of nature; the perfect horizontal slant of the scale. Positive must cancel negative, what goes up must come down.

And therefore, the world is also a terribly cruel place.

It is astounding how, at this stage of technological and cultural development, the human race yet remains with a mindset that has barely crossed the Chalcolithic Era.

This backwardness is present everywhere: from the existence of pesticidal sprays to world hunger. And even though the human brain is estimated to be the most powerful creation of the Big Bang, we still cannot even fathom a concept so simple as love.

How cruel is it? To witness, or worse, to experience? To be forcibly trapped in an inescapable nightmare as this great "love" slowly turns you inside-out?

It's pathetic, is it not? The extent to which our race has reached if, in today's world, politeness is mistaken for flirting, friendliness for romantic interest, and the worst - true love, for platonic affinity?

Somewhere, sometime in the history of the solar system, can you imagine? An excited little girl, [h/c] locks bouncing against her shoulders as she raced to catch up with her pretty [c/e/c]-eyed classmate, the one she'd had her heart and eyes set on from the very start, the one she'd promised she'd be with till the end of the line.

"[c/n]!" called she. "[c/n]! Wait up!"

And she did stop, luscious [c/h/c] hair spilling over her shoulders as she turned, a dazzling smile over her lips. The mellow sunlight broke through her hair, striking her face perfectly, illuminating her charming features. The scene was more than enough to take [y/n]'s breath away.

"I made you a bracelet!" [y/n] exclaimed as her feet found [c/n], glowing in pride as she held out a beaded bracelet with two initials embedded into it.

"[y/n]!" gasped the other. "It's beautiful!"

"It means we'll always be friends" assured the smiling [y/n].

And yet, how could everything change so quickly?

Ten years in the measure of astronomy is an utterly insignificant period of time. And still how ironic it is that those ten years could cause more disruptions in the life of a young teenager than the Big Bang ever did in the record-books of the Universe?

She could never have imagined that in ten years, she would find tears rolling from her [e/c] irises, feeling them leave sticky tracks on her creamy skin, as she tried desperately to remember where it all went wrong, where she'd dropped the wrong message. It was everything she had wanted, as a child and as she grew, and it happened to be the one thing she could never have.

It had been blissful, watching as the [c/e/c] of her eyes lit up like they always did, even more so knowing that she was the reason this time. [y/n] bit back a giggle.

"Thanks, love, it's even more beautiful than last year's!" [c/n] locked the intricate bracelet around her wrist. [y/n] looked adoringly up at her, recognizing the usual butterflies springing to life in her stomach.

"Such an artist, you" [c/n] laughed, hooking one arm around [y/n]'s shoulder and guiding her along the cobbled hallways. [y/n] followed shyly, heat and blood rushing to her face.

"Only for you, sweetheart" She winked. [c/n] raised her eyebrows, lips pulling upwards.

"You're insatiable, [y/n/n]. Hey, listen-" [c/n] stopped them suddenly, turning meaningfully towards [y/n]. "-it is-- really pretty, [y/n]. I couldn't love it more. But I have to get to class now"

She laughed, a tint of pink spreading across her cheeks. [y/n] blushed fiercely, lowering her gaze.

"See you around?"

"Definitely" [y/n] nodded confidently. [c/n] smiled.

"Great"

And then, without absolutely any warning, [c/n] did the unthinkable, to [y/n] at least. Hurriedly bending, she brushed her lips across [y/n]'s cheek, pulling away much too soon. Cheeks flaming, [y/n] looked up in surprise at the beaming [c/n].

"You're such a great friend, [y/n]" She expressed fondly. "I'm the luckiest girl ever, to be able to call you my best friend"

And then she left, just like that, after telling [y/n] stories with her eyes and then crushing them in one statement. As if she didn't leave her best friend brokenhearted in her wake, wishing only to be more than friends.

Now she rested her head against the wall, her soul tired, [e/c] eyes raw from crying them out, and drew in a deep breath.

The world is a terribly cruel place.
