A Troubled Stew
Saturday morning, Gauri was busy climbing out of Om's bed when her foot caught on the edge of the carpet and she yelped in pain.
"Ouch!" she wailed and sat back down on the bed pulling her foot to her lap and examining the source of the pain. It was a stupid nail pin that had found its way to the surface of the carpet and pricked her foot in its ignorance. She swore at the pin, knowing that it was useless. Yet it released some of the steam she had woken up with this morning.
The past few days had kept her on edge the entire time, not because she had a hard test next week or because she was a little worried about Annika's aloofness...no, no, no....it was because an annoying little someone happened to have the incessant need to call her boyfriend every waking minute of the day. Okay, not every day, Gauri thought, but still Riddhima was becoming a part of her life more than Gauri wanted to handle. It had first started with apartment hunting, then food hunting, then help with shopping, then banking and now she was asking Om to help her set up her new apartment which was conveniently down the street from theirs.
Om had shrugged it all off as a friend helping a friend but Gauri could tell that even he wasn't too comfortable in her presence. And she wondered whether her boyfriend was the sweetest person on this planet or just an idiot who couldn't see the manipulative ways of his ex.
Next to her, Om opened his eyes and smiled at her sleepily before muttering a quiet 'Good Morning'.
"Did I fall asleep studying last night?"
His smile widened and he leaned over on his elbow. "Yup. This time you were muttering the bacteria names in your sleep. I actually freaked out."
Gauri rolled her eyes smiling. "But I still have trouble remembering them."
Om leaned closer and kissed her forehead. "Stop stressing, you'll do fine on the test."
"Hmm" she murmured letting her thoughts still for a moment and inviting the warm feeling of his kiss into her brain.
"How's your work going?" she asked darting her eyes to the unfinished rough sketch of the skyscraper in downtown Boston that had been the center of Om's drawings for the past week. During his first exhibition, amongst praises and accolades he had also received criticism from the art gurus about his paintings leaning more on abstract concepts.
Om took it sportingly, diving into research on Realism - a revolutionary art form in the 1800s that had changed the form of art - and had taken to subjects that were tangible. In fact, his recently finished still life had been so beautiful that Gauri had tears in her eyes when she saw it.
"The art's coming along just fine" he said, "but I hate my job and I'm getting increasingly motivated to quit with all the work that's on my desk right now." he sighed.
She smiled at him and kissed his cheek. "Stop stressing, you'll be fine." she repeated.
"I also have to take Riddhima to the salon today evening because her car didn't deliver on time."
