Avery sighed and moved toward the unicorn, waving her hands at it, trying to scare it off. The infuriating creature didn't even flinch. It blinked solemnly at her and hobbled toward her for a few steps before stopping and pricking up its head as if asking, "Well?"
She frowned and walked up to it, not trying to be slow and careful. It snorted a bit and when she reached it, she confidently rubbed her hand down its neck and shoulder. It shook its head a bit and the flesh that she touched shuddered under her fingers again, like a horse's skin would. She looked back at her dogs and both Koda and Diesel had plopped themselves down, not looking the slightest bit concerned about the mystical creature that had decided to follow them. She turned back around and sighed.
"Well, looks like you'll be sticking with us then, yeah?" She patted its shoulder. The unicorn wasn't very big, only about the size of a full grown mule deer or fallow deer, although that put it about the same height as her.
It was so fine boned she didn't think it could hold a rider. Well, maybe. If that rider was a child. She slid her hand down the unicorn's side and hummed in thought. Its hide felt like a horse's would when its coat grew out for the winter, only it had the body of a deer. She saw its feet and its hooves were cloven like a deer's as well. When she saw the tail swish behind it, she was thrown for a loop. The tail was like a lion's with a tuft of long, silvery white hair at the end.
She turned to look at its head and she found it eyeing her, not warily, but not curiously either. It looked...solemn. She ran her fingers through the silvery white mane and marveled at the texture. It was so silky and soft. It snorted and turned away to lick it's shoulder.
While it was distracted, she took the time to look at its injured leg. She knelt down, running her hand down its hip and thigh. Gingerly she began to feel down the leg until she reached a spot that made the creature flinch. It made a small sound that she couldn't describe, she had nothing to compare it to, but it definitely sounded pained.
"Sorry there, but I gotta see if your leg is broken." Not that she figured the unicorn would understand. She patted the unicorn's side and began to gingerly press on the leg. It didn't seem broken, just badly sprained. She looked down at herself and moaned. Quickly, she grabbed the sewn hem of her shoulder and pulled, ripping the sleeve of her shirt off. Goosebumps rose on her arms and she shivered.
Avery set the cloth on the ground and stuffed clean snow inside the sleeve. She then wrapped the clothing around its leg and tied off the ends. Her task done, she peeked a glance under the creature and found out the unicorn was a lady. With a tired grunt, she stood, using the unicorn's back to help her up and looked down as she gingerly set her hoof in the snow. Avery nodded and turned away, her body shuddering.
Just because she could, she pulled out one of the leashes and looped it around the unicorn's face, making a makeshift halter. She gripped the other end and tugged lightly, getting the lady to follow. If she was going to spend that much time and effort in rescuing the stupid thing, she was damn well going to make sure it stayed with her. She whistled and her dogs jumped up to follow.
Avery took a few steps and abruptly stopped. She had no idea where she was going. She wasn't even sure if she was still in the U.S. She obviously wasn't in Texas, not with this snow. She had reason to believe she wasn't even on Earth anymore. She just didn't know. Stuff like this just didn't happen to people. Not in reality.
With a sigh, she looked up and saw light peering down through the trees, dappling the snow. It felt like she'd been at the pit for hours, when if she thought about it, she'd only been there for about twenty minutes, half an hour tops. She was just so tired.
