No Women, No Kids

It had been 7 months since Sarah had revealed to Kenneth that they were expecting a baby, at first Kenneth had been shocked at how suddenly Sarah had told him but eventually had calmed down and was actually looking forward to having a baby. Sarah had smiled brightly as she celebrated another blow in her favor against Laura when Kenneth had walked to her and sighed. He quietly looked up at her and asked, “how long have you known?”

Sarah opened her mouth as she was about to answer but closed it immediately.

How long have I known, she asked herself.

Sarah looked up once more at Kenneth now surer of herself, “eight weeks,” she said. She winced as Kenneth’s eyes widened either in anger or shock.

“That makes almost three months, Sarah!” Kenneth had said.

“I know,” Sarah had quietly said.

They had eventually talked and agreed that despite how Sarah had hidden her pregnancy, they would eventually make it. Sarah had told Kenneth that her reasons for hiding her pregnancy had been that she wasn’t sure if that was what he wanted. Kenneth had left the topic eventually.

Days later Laura had found out and was enraged; she knew this way, Kenneth would never come back to her. With a baby in her favor, Sarah had assured her place at Kenneth’s side. Something had to be done…

So she invited Sarah for dinner one night at The Royale to congratulate her about her baby.

Sarah had accepted the invitation, she had smiled when she realized this would be the perfect chance to brag to Laura about how her and Kenneth’s relationship was assured.

That night Sarah didn’t immediately recognize her former best friend, Laura had her black as the night instead of her normal blonde, and it was straight instead of curly. Sarah sighed as she joined her at the table, “Laura—“

“Sarah!” Laura faked a smile, “but how lovely you look pregnant. How long—“

“Seven months,” Sarah quietly answered. Feeling uncomfortable by Laura’s appearance; Laura’s blue eyes were sparkling, almost glowing in a supernatural way. Sarah looked at Laura deeply in thought, she opened her mouth as she was about to ask her why the sudden change when she closed it almost immediately when it hit her.

She’s trying to bring Eleanor back, Sarah thought.

“But you should be very careful, Sarah. Miscarriages are very common on people of your age,” Laura said darkly, “either, accidental or caused.” Her glare intensified as she leaned forward.

Sarah’s desire to brag her pregnancy suddenly vanished as she let out a small gasp and released a breath she didn’t know she had been holding, she gripped a napkin as she leaned back over her chair. “Let’s just not worry about these issues, Laura.” Sarah smiled as she faked a sweet gaze, “let’s just have some fun like we used to when we started working together.”

“How—“

“Tell me everything you can deduce from that couple over there,” Sarah’s attempt at changing the subject had been successful as Laura twisted her head to the side and was met by the sight of a couple of brunettes sharing dinner. Laura bit her bottom lip as she stared directly at the couple; Laura finally, after 4 minutes, turned her gaze back to Sarah, “she’s cheating on him.” She simply said.

“How can you tell? They look very happy to me.” Sarah said as she turned to the couple.

"Her bracelet is new, and expensive. Obviously something that she can't afford going by the state of her handbag. Could have been a gift splurged by her boyfriend, except that she keeps covering it with her hand and rubbing it nervously. She's worried that he's going to notice something's off about it. That it's real and that he's never seen her wear it before. So she tries to keep his attention diverted away from it. If he had bought it for her, she would have worn it proudly. So, a pricey gift that she doesn't want him to get suspicious about. Conclusion, there's another, much richer, lover. It's a testament to her stupidity that she didn't just keep it hidden in her jewelry box, unless she's harboring an unconscious desire for him to find out on his own and end the relationship without her having to break it to him. Sentiment.” Laura said as she made a look like if she couldn’t believe Sarah was actually that slow, “obvious, isn’t it?” She asked as she crossed her arms.

Sarah thought she would have to fake her amazement to keep the conversation going but she didn’t have to, she was truly amazed, “not obvious to me, thought.” She said as she sighed.

“Like always,” Laura said.

“Not all of us have your almost super human abilities to deduce,” Sarah pointed out.

“Yes, I guess.”

The night had went on like that until Sarah had eventually left, Laura leaned back over her chair as soon as Sarah had left the restaurant, the beautiful black haired woman had stood up from her seat and walked to Laura as she grinned. Laura looked up at her companion as she sighed.

“You’re finally here,” she said.

“I’ve been here since you were speaking to blondie,” the woman said as she sat down with her, “didn’t want to interrupt your miscarriage threats.”

Laura grinned at her old friend, “huh, I’m counting with your help, right?”

The woman put her cup down as fast as she could and looked up with wide green eyes, “what are you implying?”

“You know what I mean, darling.”

“I will not cause a miscarriage, Laura.” The woman assured.

“It doesn’t need to be a miscarriage. We might allow the little human to make it at least three months and then kill it.” Laura coldly said.

“I’m not doing this, Laura.”

“I’m asking you for something as simple as killing a baby,” Laura said.

The woman stared directly into Laura’s eyes as she sighed, “if you wish the child to be so much dead then why don’t you do it yourself?”

“I know better than to get my hands dirty.”

“So do I,” the woman chuckled.

“I thought you to be the great assassin people says you to be,” Laura coldly said.

“No women, no kids,” Irene Donovan said as she stood up and walked away without once looking back.
