Just as Sarah was getting ready to go take a walk her phone rang. She picked it up as she stared at it in concern. Since when Greg called her? Unless it was because of a case and right now she was in her maternity leave. Had something happened to Kenneth? Was something about Laura?
"Hello?" She answered.
"Sarah? Is Kenneth home?" Greg asked.
"Um, no. He isn't home yet but if you want me to I can call him--"
"No, it's ok. It is you who I need to talk to."
"Me?"
"Sarah, you know how much I hate to repeat myself."
"Ok, I'm sorry. What do you need?" Sarah asked.
"It's about Kenneth."
"What happened?"
"Has he ever spoken to you about Milverton?" Greg hesitantly asked.
"Just about the things we all know about him. Who he killed, the brands, his MO, why he did so--why?"
"Has he ever told you why is he so sure about him being dead?"
Sarah sighed, "he told me about Lorraine and Regina, I am very sorry. And I cannot imagine the pain Laura went through after her daughter's death."
Greg rolled his eyes, "that doesn't answer my question."
"Well he has told me that Milverton had too many enemies and that he is more likely to be dead rather than active."
"Sarah, I believe Kenneth killed him."
"What? But when?"
"Some years ago, Kenneth and I were working Milverton's case. Kenneth went undercover by the name of Erick Carlington playing the role of a normal British man who went to the pub in which he picked out his victims every night. I gave Kenneth the task of taking care of Milverton while I solved a case back in Dublin. When I came back Kenneth told me that Milverton had disappeared and had taken his daughter with him."
"Milverton had a daughter?"
"Her name is Nirvana." Greg said, "however he never said anything further and I knew better than to push the matter further."
"And that necessarily means that he killed him?" Sarah asked.
"I don't know," Greg said "I need you to talk to him."
Sarah sighed, "I'll talk to him."
"Thanks," Greg said, "now I must go."
"Goodbye, thanks for letting me know." Sarah said.
[...]
Kenneth sighed as he rubbed his face with his hands. He was tired and frustrated. What was this about? He knew Milverton was dead. He had made sure of it. He had clamped his hand over his mouth and nose to prevent him from breathing just after shooting him causing him to fall backwards down the stairway of his manor. He had made sure the telephone line to be dead to ensure neither Milverton nor Nirvana would be able to dial 999. Then how in God's name was Milverton back? He knew this had to a copycat. But how in earth would he prove Milverton's death without everyone else finding out that he had murdered him?
Kenneth silently walked up the stairs of his flat and watched through the window. Deep in his thoughts. It was the sound of his phone ringing that brought him back to reality.
"Hello?"
Sarah watched from a distance as she heard her boyfriend talk in the phone. She gritted her teeth as she heard him. She stood behind him as he spoke, totally unaware of her presence.
"He's dead, I can assure you..."
Sarah's eyes widened a little as she heard Kenneth.
"Because I killed him!" Kenneth unexpectedly growled, "does that answer your question? Because I killed the bastard!"
Sarah watched as Kenneth threw his phone away from the balcony in horror. Why was Kenneth being so destructive? Kenneth started panting heavily as his anger started to soothe. It was when Sarah dared to speak.
"Kenneth..."
Kenneth closed his eyes as he shook his head slowly, he opened them once again and turned around slowly to meet the sight of a horrified Sarah Sawyer with a frightened look in her blue eyes. Kenneth knew he had done wrong by reacting the way he did knowing Sarah was home. However he had not expected Sarah to be standing exactly behind him. Kenneth took a step forward only for Sarah to back away from him.
"Don't come any closer," she warned.
"Sarah, please..."
"Kenneth, don't come any closer."
"Let me explain."
"You better explain."
"I killed Milverton because they didn't leave me a choice." Kenneth said.
"So you killed him to stop him? It's that what the great Kenneth Morstan does to catch criminals?" Sarah asked as she looked at him in disgust.
"Sarah, it's not that!" Kenneth answered as he ran his hands through his dark curls.
Sarah glared, "then what is it?"
"I did what I had to. What every detective has to." Kenneth said firmly, "I stopped the murderer."
"But you became one in the process." Sarah coldly said as she struggled to hide her hurt before walking away from the man she once had loved.
