Its a brand new day
No matter what they sayI sang around my room, dancing and smilling. I was happy because I was going to meet Alhaji Bello. And I was happy because I knew I was happy to get money.
I wore my uniform, picked my phone and walked out. I was no longer limping, I still had the sore feelings but it was not aching like the day before.
"Come and eat Binta." My mom ordered immeduately i walked into the kitchen. The food she was talking about was pap and Akara. I made a face as I didn't want to eat at all."Mama, I'm already late" Which was a lie, it was just seven thirty and I still had thirty minutes before I had to be in school.
"Nonsense, take a little." She didn't wait for a reply and shove it toeards me.
I reluctantly collect it and took three sips of the pap and three akara.
Then gave it back to her, I could see she was not happy I didn't finished it but she made no comment about it."Im going now mama, see you later." I said and left the house, making my way down our street to board a taxi. Yes you read it correctly. I no longer took a keke but a Taxi. I could afford it now.
As I entered the school, I saw Basma and Dorcas, the latter giving me a hiss and walking away. While Basma hugged me.
"Hey girl, I miss you!" She exclaimed making me smile. I think it's safe to say she was my best friend. She was my safe haven, I always went to her yo get advice .
"I miss you too, I have so much to tell you.""Oh really?" And I nodded. "Let's go to class first." She said and we left.
Reaching the class, I noticed her looking at me weirdly."What?" I asked.
"Why are you walking weirdly?" She asked with a confused expression.
I smiled at her, i knew she would notice." That's what I wanted to tell you. So guess who finally become a woman yesterday!""You got your period?" She yelled enthusiastically . Then noticed what she said."Wait you already got your period. What are you talking about?"
"Basma, When someone said she has finally become a woman, what does she mean?"
"But you have always been a woman, you're not making sense."
I slapped my forehead. Seriously?
"I lost my virginity yesterday! "I expressed happily, I thought she would start screaming and jumping happily but she didn't. Instead I got the opposite.
"What?" She asked. Her face frowning and her eyes showing disappointment.
"Why, why aren't you haply for me?" I queried confused. I mean it was a big achievement, I deserved accolades from my bestfriend.
"Fatima, what did you do? What did you Do?" She yelled pacing in front of me.I was really confused, why was she acting like it was a big deal.
"Fatima, do you know the implication of what you just did? You're a muslim for Godsake, you know how strong this sin is to us and our religion. How could you be so stupid?"
"What? I'm not the first person to lose her virginity, why are you making this into a bigger deal." I yelled back.
"You're grave is not the same with theirs Fatima, you're going to be buried alone, you will face everything alone." She adviced and i looked like her like she had two head.
"You're one to talk, you're not exactly virgin mary either." I blurted out."Alhamdulillah I am, no one on this earth will ever say I have slept with him."
"So you think its okay to judge me, just because you don't do it? Where is the Basma I know, the kind Basma? Because you're just been a judgmental bitch." And that ladies and gentlemen was how i lost my bestfriend, I needed to control my mouth one of this days.
"Im sorry for trying to advice you, this judgmental bitch won't make another comment about your life anymore. Goodbye." And with a hurt expression, walked out of the class making me regret everything all over again.
