'Got Your Back' A Gabentine Story?

Chapter Five Trust Broken

"Gabe, Gabe." Clementine hissed trying to be both urgent and quiet,she looked around but didn't see him. She turned around, "There!", She thought as she saw a figure moving fast. She took off after him.

Gabe was running, where? He didn't know. But he had to get away. He just kept running without a goal or reason, until he tried to hop a low tree that had fallen on another tree. He clipped the top of the tree and fell on his face, " Stupid... Fuck! Son of a Bitch!" He yelled as his bat went rolling away from him, but he didn't care if he attracted attention anymore, "let them come, I'll kill them!" He thought rubbing his face.

He was in a small clearing in the woods and with the running desire gone he just stood there. "Why did I run? I should've attacked those guys or stayed with Clem. Why Am I such an idiot?." He sighed and tried to catch his breath. "What the fuck's wrong with me? My mind's been a mess ever since-"  Gabe heard a rustling noise behind him and he quickly turned to face it. Clementine, with a some bristles stuck in her jacket, had spotted him.

"Gabe... What was that?" She asked a mix of angry and worry in her face.

"I...I don't know." Gabe said honestly, he didn't know what was going on with him.

Clementine took a breath and hoped the log, "Look Gabe, the best thing we can do to help Richmond is get to the McCarroll Ranch, they put AJ there, If David thought he was safe there then they must have a good number of people to defend the place, meaning we can ask for help for Richmond."

Gabe nodded, honestly he had no ideas, his brained was all messed up. Then Gabe noticed something, : Clem had hopped the log but she hadn't moved any closer to him which was weird because he was standing in the middle of the clearing,he frowned, "Clem, why are you staying so far away from me?"

She looked away, " Gabe....You've been acting....weird...I'm not sure what to expect from you....and you just were....really mad."

Gabe thought he was feeling upset before , but now one of the worst feelings  he ever felt happened,:Clementine didn't want to be near him! "Does she think I'm going crazy or that I'm dangerous?" He thought. "Maybe I am....."

Gabe was so sickened with himself that he couldn't even look at look at Clem, he lowered his head in disgust.

"Gabe?" She said softly.

"No." Was all Gabe said.

A silence followed until Gabe heard a horrifying sound, : Clem screamed, "GABE! HELP!"

Gabe pulled his head up and drew his pistol in a second. He saw that Clementine had been grabbed by a walker, it had its arms around her but couldn't bite her yet because it was on the other side of the log. Gabe Aimed his gun like Javi had taught him, he took a breath, and gently began to pull the trigger. "Hurry, Gabe!" Clem said trying to break free but the walker had a strong grip on her. "C'mon Gabe,SAVE HER DAMMIT!" He thought as he got a clear shot...."What if you hit her?" Came a horrifying thought into Gabe's head.

He lost his perfect shot, the walker was so close to biting her..... Gabe's mind panicked, "Just shoot she'll die if you don't! No if you hit her you'll kill her! Where's the bat?!" Gabe quickly looked around, "where was it?!"

"Gabe! Please! Just shoot him!" Clem begged, desperately trying to break free.

"Don't, you'll hit her!" Said a part of his mind as he looked around for his bat,...."Wait! The knife!" Gabe pulled the knife out of its sheath and ran towards Clementine.

He was too slow........

Clementine had already broken loose and upon seeing Gabe's bat lying on the ground nearby, used it to smash the walker's head. Gabe stopped his charge a few feet short of Clem, he was feeling a mix of emotions, shame and anger, relief and uncertainty. Clem threw the bat to the ground and spun around at Gabe angry blazing in her eyes, "What the fuck was that?!" She said stomping up to him.

"I-I-I didn't want to hit you." Gabe said feeling stupid and useless.

"You're as lucky as hell that I'm not I'm dead right now! If I was weak or not trained, I'd be dead, thanks to you!! What if I was Mariana, Gabe? Huh? You just gonna give up and quit on her? You just gonna watch your friends die because you're too afraid to pull a trigger to save them?!" She lowered her voice and looked away from him, " I thought I could count on you." Overkill maybe? Clem thought to herself, NO, Gabe left you to die! He needs to hear this! Although Clem still felt she could've handled that better...

Gabe stood there in stunned silence, taking in what she said, each word she said a a nail in his heart-coffin until she said the last line, "I thought I could count on you."..... those words echoed in his head...over and over... until he snapped.

He dropped to his knees, Clem took a step back looking at him cautiously. He took a breath, " You're Right Clem.... you're right.....I'm just.... a fuck-up,....a real piece of shit person......a coward..... a burden on good people.....why don't you go find AJ......without a extra burden on you." His tone was lifeless.....just like how he felt.....

"Gabe, Now's not the time for feeling bad about yourself," Clem said quietly, thinking she went too far, "you need to-"

"'Feel bad for myself?!' You think that's what this is?! No it's the truth......All I ever did was fuck things up, I couldn't save Mariana, I was a jackass to Kate and It's probably my fault she died! If I would of stayed with her I could of saved her! I almost killed my dad and fucked up our bond, I almost killed Javi and I treated anyone who loved me like shit. I'm a disgrace to anyone who knew me......" Gabe had started angry, but by the end he felt dead on the inside again.

Clem laid a hand on his shoulder, "Look Gabe....I know how your feeling-"

"NO YOU FUCKING DON'T!!!" Gabe yelled slapping her hand and jumping to his feet. He looked her straight in the face, she had flinched at the smack and had a quick look of fear before she hid it but she didn't back down. As he continued, he could feel his body shaking with rage, " DON'T YOU FUCKING LIE TO ME! YOU HAVE NO FUCKING IDEA WHAT THIS IS LIKE! Everyone loves you,  you're cool and tough and they trust you! Javi even trusts you more than me! SO DON'T PRETEND YOU HAVE ANY  FUCKING CLUE ABOUT WHAT THIS LIKE!!!

Something inside Clementine snapped, " You think you got it rough?! You think you're a fuck-up?! You wanna know why you found me alone, by myself?! BECAUSE EVERYONE I LOVED IS DEAD BECAUSE OF ME!" She shouted in his face, hot tears coming down her face.

Gabe took a step back, "What have I done?!" He thought, he had never seen Clem like that before, he felt horrified that HE had done that to her!

"Clem I'm-"

"No. Just....no" Clem said looking at the ground, her voice choked up. Gabe could see tears hit the ground.

"Here.." Clem said grabbing her water canteen, " Go....Fill this at the stream." She pushed it into his hands, refusing to look up at him, before walking a few steps away and turning her back to him.

Gabe hadn't moved the whole time until she turned her back to him, then slowly he picked up his bloody baseball bat and silently left.

Once Clem no longer heard his steps, she looked over her shoulder and seeing he was gone, she fell to her knees and cried.
