Bad Liar

Karissa's POV

All eyes were drawn towards me as I walked into my chemistry class late. The teacher crossed his arms and looked at me.

"Miss Stewart, you're late. Did you happen to see Zach Herron on your way here?" Mr. Harold, the teacher, asked. So, that's all they cared about. I didn't get why everyone wasn't used to Zach not showing up, I never even realized he was in this class. That's how gone he was.

I didn't know if I should tell them about Zach skipping. Then, I would be a snitch. No one likes a snitch.

"No, I didn't," I shook my head. Mr. Harold looked skeptical but he didn't question any further. I took my seat next to Damion in the back. Immediately, Damion turned to me. His mouth formed a small smile and his eyes sparkled.

"You're a bad liar, you know?" Damion said, barely over a whisper.

"I'm only a bad liar to you. And it only has to do with the fact that we've known each other for so long," I replied.

"Maybe. Or maybe you just suck at it," Damion teased me. I rolled my eyes and giggled a little. In front of us, a kid turned around and motioned for us to be quiet. This caused Damion to smile at me before directing his attention back to Mr. Harold.

The rest of my classes leading to lunch all dragged on. The day seemed to not be getting shorter, and I hated it. However, lunch was better. Damion, Hannah, a couple more of Damion's friends, a girl in my math class, and I all sat at our usual table. While the others carried on about some conversation about a play for the football game, and the girl in my math class watched in awe, Damion, Hannah, and I carried on a conversation.

"You know, prom is coming up," Hannah told Damion and I.

"We do know. Prom has been one of the only words out of your mouth for the last three months," Damion teased. Hannah rolled her eyes as Damion smiled at her.

"Anyways, who are you guys thinking about taking?" Hannah asked.

"They haven't even announced the official date of prom, Hannah. What if we're busy?" I asked. Damion nodded in agreement.

"It's our senior prom, guys! Sneak out if you have to!" Hannah complained.

"Sneak out?" one of the kids Zach Herron hangs around with, Jonah Marais, asked as he approached our table. I found it weird as he sat down next to Damion.

"Hey, what's up, man?" Damion asked, doing a little handshake thing with Jonah. Jonah took a seat like he had been sitting here all of high school. I was confused. I didn't even know Damion was friends with someone like Jonah.

"I'm the king of sneaking out so if either of you ladies need help..." Jonah trailed off, giving both Hannah and I winks. Hannah rolled her eyes but then smiled. I was still trying to process the fact that Jonah was sitting here. Where was Zach? Was he still gone?

"You good, Riss? You look like you've just seen a ghost," Damion said, giving me a smile.

"Yeah, I'm good," I assured him, nodding my head.

"Such a bad liar," Damion laughed, shaking his head.
