"hello is this Mrs Lucy Lingard?" a woman said down the phone
"this is she" I replied
"I'm sorry to have to tell you this over the phone, but your grandfather has been taken into hospital after collapsing in his home" she told me
"oh my god, is he okay?" I asked
"we're not sure but we're monitoring him at the moment" she explained
"okay which hospital are you at, I'll come down from Manchester right away" I said
"king's college" she answered
"right thank you for calling" I said before I hung up
"hey mum" I said once she picked up
"did the hospital call you too?" she asked me
"yeah, Jesse's at training right now so I'm leaving him a note and getting the plane with Nate" I told her
"I'm sure grandad will understand if you wait until tomorrow and talk to Jesse about this" she pointed out
"mum this is grandad's health" I sighed
"okay okay there's no changing your mind is there" she chuckled
"nope, I'll be there in like 3 hours" I said before we said goodbye and hung up

"jesus" I gasped when I walked into the hospital room
"c'mere darling" my grandma said pulling me into a hug
"what happened?" I asked
"he had a stroke, they're monitoring him but it's just a matter of time" she explained
"oh my god" I exclaimed covering my face with my hands
"where's Nate anyway?" she asked me after a couple minutes of us just sitting with him
"I dropped him of with Katy and Harry" I told her
"well at least she's getting some practice, she needs it if she's due in March" she chuckled lightly
"yeah I can't believe she's gonna have a baby in 5 months" I smiled
"I just wish he could be there to see it" she said getting emotional
"we've just gotta hope for a miracle" I sighed
"you know what they say about hope, it breeds eternal misery" she sobbed
"I'm sorry to interrupt" the doctor said as he walked in the room
"that's okay" I said standing up to speak to him
"we've assessed everything, and we think it's time to let him go" he told us
"grandma, are you ready?" I asked her
"he'll be in a better place" she said, trying to convince herself
"I'll give you a couple minutes to say goodbye" he said as he walked out the door
"everybody loves you so much" I cried holding his hand "Nate loves when his great grandad would tickle his little belly, and I'm sure this new little baby would've loved you just as much" I said putting my free hand on my belly
"what?" my grandma gasped
"it's really early days, I haven't even told Jesse yet, I was waiting until I had my first appointment so I can get the pictures" I explained
"well I guess when a family member dies one really is born" she smiled

"Lucy what the fuck, you can't just run off to London with Nate without telling me why!" Jesse exclaimed down the phone
"Jess don't shout at me" I sighed
"I'm not shouting, but I am mad why the hell did you leave? You can't do that shit you're a wife and a mum!" he questioned
"my grandad died" I cried
"oh shit babe I'm so sorry" he apologised
"it's fine, I'll probably come home tomorrow I think I should stay with Grandma tonight" I told him
"okay you know how much I love you, I'm sorry" he said
"of course, I love you too but I'm gonna go and spend some time with Grandma" I said before we said goodbye
