Scientific Makeup: Member of the Chalcedony family. A variety of quartz often with iron and aluminum. Dark, bright green with red inclusions. White streak. Considered a microcrystalline version of quartz. Not found in crystal form, only stone.

Environment: Generally formed near the surface of the earth, where pressures and temperatures are low. Commonly forms in the zone of alteration of lode and massive hydro-thermal replacement deposits and as bodies of chert in chemical sedimentary rocks.

Found in: India and Germany.

Name: Also referred to as "heliotrope", which is derived from two Greek words which translates to "sun-turning", from the notion that if emerged in water it would give off a sun red color.

Magick and Legend: Carried by ancient warriors because of its ability to stop bleeding when pressed to a war-wound. Can be used for money spells. Considered a lucky stone for athletes, as it imparts courage and stamina. One of the birthstones for March:

"Who in this world of ours, her eyes

In March first opens, shall be wise.
In days of peril, firm and brave,
And wear a Bloodstone to her grave."

Healing: Used in ANY association with blood.

Note: Chrysoprase, carnelian, jasper and agate are all forms of Chalcedony, making them "cousins" of the bloodstone.
