Scientific Makeup: Beryllium aluminum silicate, often found with sodium, lithium, and cesium. Ranges in color from canary to gold. Less common are a dull yellow, sometimes with a hint of green. White streak. Hardness is 7 1/2 - 8.

Environment: Develops in pegmatites and certain metamorphic rocks. Occurs with quartz, microcline, and muscovite in pegmatites. Occurs with quartz, muscovite, and almandine in schist of regional metamorphic rocks.

Found in: Mined commercially in the New England states (Maryland, for example). Very fine specimens from North Carolina, California, and Virginia. Also found in Brazil and Madagascar.

Magick and Legend: In ancient times was cut into ovals and used in scrying. Used to be considered superior to clear quartz. Often confused with topaz and used with the same things as topaz. Said to protect the wearer against telepathic manipulation. Increase psychic awareness. Associated with the sun.

Healing: Recommended for ailments of the liver, stomach, glands and eyes. Energize the body as a whole and boost the immune system. Good stone for exhaustion, depression, nausea, diarrhea, ulcers, constipation, and obesity.
