Scientific Makeup: Occurs as volcanic lava flows that are thick and of limited area. Forms when a silica-rich magma of granitic composition flows onto the earth's surface, where it solidifies before minerals can develop and crystallize. More of a glass than a culmination of minerals. Color varies from gray, reddish brown, mahogany and dark green, but these are rare. Color is usually pitch black. Hardness is 6 - 7.

Found in: California, Oregon, Wyoming, and Mexico.

Name: Latin. Derived from the word "obsio", which was the original name of the stone.

Magick and Legend: Polished pieces used in scrying. Primitive peoples valued obsidian highly, chipping and flaking it into knives, spearheads, and many other implements with razor-sharp edges resulting from the intersecting conchoidal fractures. A very protective stone. Associated with the inner mysterious of the Moon Goddess. Symbolizes entrance into a labyrinth, the womb, or the subconscious self. Good for those who are soft hearted and gentle.

Healing: Helps guard against abuse. Cleanses toxins from the liver. Good for those exposed to environmental pollutants.
