"i love this. not too fancy." natalia smiled. daniel had driven them up to a hill that overlooked the city. daniel had brought a couple snacks with him so that they could watch the sunset together.

"i'm no jonah. but it works, right?" daniel asked natalia.

"i've only met jonah like twice but you definitely top him." natalia smiled, throwing her arms around his neck. daniel put his hands on her waist and they just stood there like that for a second.

"i like your tooth gap, it's cute." natalia giggled. daniel smiled to himself, recalling all the times maci called him tooth gap. he had been disappointed that when they had texted earlier she hadn't called him that.

"thank you." daniel said, softly. natalia walked away from him and hopped on the tailgate of the truck. daniel sat next to her and they looked at the view.

"i've never had a guy do anything like this for me before. usually they're all just basic and take me to the movies." natalia laughed.

"well, they aren't creative." daniel said. daniel hopped off the tailgate for a second, went to the front seat and turned on the radio so it was softly playing in the background. a song from shawn mendes filled the silence.

daniel returned to his place next to natalia as he thought about all the pictures of shawn mendes holding sticky notes that maci had. he laughed a little to himself.

"penny for your thoughts?" natalia asked, smiling a little.

"you don't have a penny." daniel laughed.

natalia reached in her pocket and pulled out a penny, trying to hand it to daniel. daniel shook his head no.

"i was just thinking of maci and how she has a billion pictures of shawn mendes holding sticky notes." daniel explained. even as the words came out of his mouth, he laughed.

"she's a goofball." natalia laughed, shaking her head.

"yeah, but it's you and me tonight. not maci, not the play, just us." daniel said, bumping natalia's shoulder with his own.

natalia put a hand on one side of daniel's jaw and then leaned in to kiss him. this took daniel by surprise a little at first, but then he started kissing her back.

in his mind, daniel saw maci smiling and remembered all those times he had with her. the song daniel was writing about her quickly came to his mind. daniel pulled back from the kiss quickly.

"what? what's wrong?" natalia asked.

"shit. i'm sorry. i have no idea what the hell is wrong with me." daniel said.

"it's maci." natalia said, plain and simple. to her surprise, she wasn't upset by this. she had seen it coming.

"what?" daniel asked.

"you light up when she's around, dan. it's not your fault. you can't choose who you like." natalia shrugged.

"she doesn't feel that way about me so i-"

"tried to find a rebound. yeah, i've been in that situation." natalia nodded.

"no, tal, you're not a rebound." daniel shook his head.

"fine. i'm a distraction." natalia teased daniel.

"it's not like that. really. i'm confused myself." daniel said.

"talk to her, dan. that's what you need to do." natalia told him. natalia jumped off the tailgate then turned to look at daniel.

"you gonna take me home?" natalia asked.

"our date isn't over yet." daniel said. natalia rolled her eyes but then hopped up by daniel again. he put his arm around her as they both watched the sunset together. after that, he took her straight home.
