Chapter Six

Around Every Corner

Blaire POV
We made it across and went to an apartment building which was obviously fancy, but we ended up going to the 8th floor. I said to take first watch, I found some supplies to help make weapons for us, I looked through my bag and came across Missy’s blanket, she was only trying to protect me and it felt like it was my fault that she got shot, I put it beside me and continued looking for rope or twine,”Blaire, it’s my turn to watch” I looked over at Cayden and Gwen,”No it’s okay”
“You’re exhausted, go to sleep Blaire” I put down the weapons and went to sleep beside Dylan

Gwen POV
“She still thinks it’s her fault isn’t it? Missy’s death” Cayden asked me and I shrugged,”I don’t know, but Chayne didn’t want to, but Ronnie did what he was told to by Nyra”
“Ronnie didn’t want to either, but he thought if he just followed her orders, he would live to see all of this....” I looked over at Cayden,”He loved you, you know, he was just shy to show it to you since he used to a Jock in High School”
“Offensive Line in Football, Track and Field” He said as he was looking outside and we looked down,”Do you ever wonder what they’re thinking?”
“Them?” He pointed at our group,”No, those Walkers down there, it kinda seems like they’re winning this” He sighed,”Yeah I-I guess I do wonder, but at the same time, no because even though they are still human, they’re still walkers and killing people” He really did have good point of views and I asked him,”Do you still think about Lance?”
“Yeah, I still do, I wonder where he’s at and how he’s doing, he was one of the best guys that I was with. I was his first” He chuckled,”When I was a Freshman in High school and he was a Junior in High school”
“Did you love him?” He looked down,”Yeah, I really did….” He was about to cry, I apologized for bringing him up and he shook his head,”No no it kinda felt like I needed to let it out, Lance and Cayden were caught in a Forest and I was forced to battle them and take them, Lance got away and we took Cayden, we heard a clatter an hour later, Blaire got up instantly with her knife in her hand,”What was it?” We walked slowly over to her,”There’s only one way to find out” She said as she got up,”Are you nuts?”
“I’d rather go out there and see what it is than sleep like a baby” We walked with her downstairs, there was snarling, I covered my mouth and Blaire went to kick them in the shin and stab them in the head, they died instantly,”Found one”
“Who knows how many there are out there” Cayden said to us,”Remember Cayden, Gwen” I said to her,”Always at the head”
“If they are a threat to us all”
“Blaire you need to sleep now” She nodded,”I know” So when we went back up there, she did go back to sleep and we talked about her and we were concerned with her well being and it does seem like she’s acting more hostile,”She’s being more hostile each day” But Cayden disagreed with me,”No, Nyra was the definition of hostile, she was about blow up that whole place the night we left. They saved us, they’re like, unbelievable”
“They taught a Pre-teen how to shoot a gun” He defended Dylan and Blaire,”They didn’t have much of a choice, she needed to know how to defend herself and Marilyn caught on quick and from what I was hearing from both of them, they raised her like one of their own”
“I guess you’re right”
“You guess I’m right?” I shrugged

Tawnin POV
When I woke up, it was I think at the crack of dawn, I got up and changed into a different pair of clothes, I looked out and saw Gwen and Cayden on watch,”Anything interesting?”
“Just walkers”
“Fabulous” I said as I grunted to get my clothes and changed,”What’s for Breakfast?” They shrugged,”No idea man” Gwen said to me and I sighed,”Oh...it’s all good, I was just gonna go check to see if it’s all clear down there” I said as I grabbed my armory,”I’ll be back in a few”
“At least bring someone with you Tawnin” I walked back up the stairs,”Like who?” Gwen got up slowly and went to James,”James get up” He groaned,”Got any of that water left?” Cayden threw her the bottle of water and dumped it on him,”What the hell?”
“Good morning my dear, now get up, you need to go with Tawnin to check the building” He sighed as he put on his shoes with sleepy eyes,”Don’t fall asleep James”
“Who woke up and named you the queen bitch?”
“Blaire” I chuckled out of amusement by her response and he got ready,”Alright, let’s go” So we went a floor down to the next,”What do you think about Gwen?” He asked me,”I just think of her as another person in this group, why?”
“She has been acting really...bitchy” I shrugged it off,”She’s been that way, even before I met her, I barely notice it” He groaned,”I’m assuming you don’t like that”
“I’m...oh Jesus Christ, she makes it hard for me to see her as a human being like you know, nice and you know what I’m saying?” I nodded and said 7th floor clear,”Look Gwen and her brother Nolan was adopted, she was raised by 2 mothers that taught her to be tough and more empowered, she still has empathy, but she’s only hard on some people because she wants to see them achieve and motivated, you know”
“But that still doesn’t back up her behavior and her smart ass answers” I turned around,”James, one thing to know about this group, we came this far as Allies in a place that we wanted out of and she helped, we were in a dark place before you 3 and we don’t need back talk in this group otherwise, this isn’t going to work for all of us”
“Okay, I understand, by the way is Blaire and Dylan you know? Together?” I nodded,”They weren’t together for a while when we were in that place because this so called leader got it into Dylan’s head that Blaire was a threat and he almost killed her, hold up” I looked down the hallway and saw 3 zombies, James raised his gun,”Not now, you’ll attract more” I threw my spear and he pulled out his knife then we got them in the head, I pulled out my strong knife to cut open the zombie,”What in the hell are you doing?”
“Blaire and Dylan’s technique, here put some on ya” He groaned,”It works, believe me, now here” I rolled my eyes because of his stubborness and then he did,”Why are we doing this?”
“If there’s 3 down here, there’s gonna be more and we are not taking the risk of being a meal to them”

Arwen POV
I put on my boots on, my slightly shredded jacket, but it was okay, it wasn’t like I wasn’t expecting it to be a fashion brand anyway,”Any food?” I asked Gwen and she shook her head,”We’re out”
“Damn it, is there at least water?” Cayden handed me his,”Thank you” Eventually everyone started to wake up in broad daylight except Samwise,”Sam wake up” I nudged him,”I’m up, I’m up, what is it?”
“Time for you to get up, come on, we gotta get moving” He said as he groaned,”Dylan, Blaire what’s the plan?”
“Right now, James and Tawnin are securing the place, giving us the all clear”
“Alone?” Blaire shook her head,”They’re boys, they can handle themselves, okay so here’s what we’re gonna do”

James POV
We looked floor after floor and there were only 17 walkers that we managed to get,”Alright, that’s all of them, let’s go, barricade the door” Tawnin said to me and I grabbed a bench to move it forward,”Yeah like a bench is gonna stop them”
“But it’ll slow them down ain’t it?” He agreed. We went back up to the 8th Floor,”Building’s secure for your escorts ladies and gentlemen”
“Thank you so much” We grabbed everything we needed and headed downstairs,”Is that zombie guts on you?” Skylar asked me,”It’s their technique, don’t ask, just do it Sky” We looked at every corner possible, even when we came out,”God it’s like they came out of the shadows”
“Shadows? More like hibernation” One said to the other,”We’ll be okay, just-” Blaire stunned one of the zombies by kicking them in the knee and stab them in the head, she asked Dylan to help and they dragged it into the alley,”You guys aren’t gonna like this”
“What do you mean?”
“Tawnin and I already did this”
“So what you’re gonna put zombie guts on everyone and-” Sam cut the Skylar off by defending Blaire and the others,”This shit works, that is how Blaire, Dylan, Javier and Chloe managed to get that far into Cali” Sky did manage to keep her mouth shut after that, I whispered into her ear,”This is for survival now, we need to do what we can to get through California”
“Got it, okay let’s do this” She put her hands into the guts, of course who wouldn’t be grossed out, but we walked through crowds of walkers

Blaire POV
They were everywhere, at every block we passed by, there were more, it was a nasty count of walkers,”How long were we gone?”
“A long time apparently” Dylan said to me and he held my hand,”We’re gonna be okay” I nodded and looked up at him,”I know” Then there were gunshots in the distance,”Nobody run, if you do then you’re already dead” Javier said to the group,“Walk the same pace as these walkers, they won’t harm us unless we panic” Chloe says to them, we can tell they were scared, we were scared too, but we also knew that we would make it worse if we panicked. James was right in front of us and he got shot in the head, we stopped and looked everywhere,”James-” Pete covered Sky’s mouth, she was about to cry, the walkers started hearing her and we had to bolt and went into a shelter that was able to isolate us from those walkers, but when we had a head count, we lost James, Paige, Amber and Jennifer.  Shit I thought to myself, Skylar looked at me like she wanted to murder me,”You did this!” Cayden got in front of me,”It’s not her fault Skylar! It’s those Raiders out there”
“Raiders?”
“It’s what we call to those people out there who will kill anyone and anything in sight, it’s nobody’s fault” Pete slapped her to get her to calm down,”They promised safety”
“They could’ve left you out there, but they didn’t, it’s not their fault Skylar, now tough it up!” She walked away from him and she pulled out a gun,”You bitch!” I knocked the gun out of her hand, I dismantled her gun by turning the safety on, removed the gun’s magazine, gun’s slide and flipped it,”You son of a-”
“Until I can feel like I can trust you with a gun around me, you’ll have it back” She scoffed and walked away, Cayden patted my back,”Well done, I didn’t know you could do that”
“I kinda had to teach myself with that” He chuckled in amusement, Pete walked over,”Even I can’t handle her when she gets that way”
“You mean this isn’t the first time?” Dylan asked and he nodded,”She has temperamental issues and she did that a couple times towards James and I, we had to knock her out to get her to calm down, but never that, you gotta teach me kid” I smiled,”Maybe later” We looked around for an alternative way,”How about we go up to the roof? We can travel from there”
“The crowds are getting bigger and there are less buildings, that’s a double negative”
“So we’re gonna be cattles here then?” Gwen asked and we said no,”We just need time”
“There is no time”
