Chapter Twenty-Seven

The Warrior + The Protector

Blaire POV
We were escorted back to The Beacon with lax security, Fynn and Cameron walked by us,”Fynn, h-how did you survive the fire? Wh-where’s Marilyn?” Fynn looked over at me,”Marilyn woke me up in time to catch a girl up there, she was the one that you must’ve heard screaming, but we couldn’t find you guys when we got out in time, the RV was gone and everything so we thought we could go down there ourselves. Had some set backs, next thing you know, we were kidnapped and we actually don’t know how long we were passed out, but we ended up waking up in a cell with this guy Henderon or Patrick or something, but you and Dylan’s name saved us” His voice trailed off as he was looking around and I knew the question he was going to ask,”Where’s Dylan? Did we leave anyone behind?” I shook my head and said softly,”No, you didn’t leave anyone behind” Then he went into denial,”No, no he can’t-he can’t be, he’s Dylan”
“But he was also Dylan when he almost turned into a Walker”
“He-” He stopped and tried to hold in tears,”That son of a bitch taught me how to fight” There was a silent moment and Dempsey noticed what was happening and he came towards us,”Anything wrong here?”
“I-I thought we left someone behind and I was thinking Howell” Dempsey was caught up in the moment that he forgot about Dylan,”Where is Howell, Primus?” I took a deep breath,”He was still Dylan when he was slowly turning into a walker” It felt like it was easier for me to say it like that instead ‘I stabbed him in the head when he was turning into a walker’ or ‘I killed him’ He stood there as the group circled around us,”No, th-that’s not…..no” He came over and hugged me,”I am so sorry Primus” When he had his hands on my shoulders, he noticed my engagement ring around my neck, his eyes widened and he understood right then and there as he looked at my tearful and baggy eyes, he pulled me into a hug again then one of the Scavengers,”Are we gonna keep moving or what? The sun isn’t gonna be out all day” Dempsey turned at the girl,”This woman here was missing for 6 years, she lost someone that she loved, these people lost the ones that they loved” She instantly shut her mouth and we kept moving

When we made it back, Dempsey said to me,”Welcome to The Beacon!” A lot has changed since 2018, now I can understand why it’s called The Beacon,”You don’t say” Gwen said to Dempsey, there was a lot of people everywhere, doing what they’re doing and….this was incredible, we got put into formation and I slowly felt lightheaded, my eyesight and hearing was getting out of place, Michelle looked at me,”No, not now Blaire”
“I’m not feeling good” I said to her,”Alright get into line and wait for further instructions from one of the Co-Leaders” One of the Minority leaders said to us and I got out of line and threw up in the garbage can, Cameron, Fynn and Dempsey went to Chloe and Michelle,”Is she infected?”
“We-we don’t know, she’s been like this for weeks, it’s getting worse and we’re hoping that you can determine for her” Michelle said to them,“Yes of course, well we’re gonna have to do it to all of ya anyway” Dempsey said to us and I walked back over groaning and one of the guys handed me a water bottle, but I realize that they were gone after they answered their questions and I recieved a water bottle,”Here you go” I thanked him….hey I recognized that voice, I looked up and it was,”Alright troops! My name is Kavanaugh, I’m one of the leaders of The Beacon! Before you’re officially citizens of The Beacon! You will be tested for medical conditions, physical conditions and your mental health and also what you’re capable of!” He said tnat last part looking at me,”You will be put in departments to keep this place going and alive! That is if….you pass the test and you can stay here. Get moving!” We were lined up and Michelle said to me,”And you dealt with that?”
“He’s no different from my coaches in the past, to be fairly honest….I missed him” She smiled and nudged me then I heard my name,”Blaire! Blaire! Over here!” I looked over to my left and saw Marilyn, I finally glowed up after seeing this girl after losing her,”Where’s Dylan?” I didn’t even answer, my heart stopped, I almost felt breathless and all there was best for me to do was not answer, take a deep breath and looked down and she knew right then and there. We got into our own examination rooms,”Okay, Miss Primus, I’m Dr.Parker and I am here to help you, so have you been feeling anything that isn’t right for you?” 
“Actually yes, I’ve been feeling more aggressive, tired or restless, numb and my eyesight and hearing has been off for the past few weeks and I’ve been nauseous” He nodded,”Anything else?”
“I’ve also been feeling like I’m hungry, but I’m afraid to eat or I’m just not hungry” He nodded again and wrote it down,”Dr. Parker, is that what I think it is?”
“It’s to be determined, but for now, you can take these tests and here is the urine cup, we’ll see what the problem is” I nodded hesistantly and went into the bathroom then I handed him the cup, he went into another room as I went out into the waiting room with the group,”Hey Blaire” I sat next to Chloe,”So you good?” I shrugged,”I had to take a urine test”
“We all had to” Pete said to us and Gwen asked,”But why?” And Andrea answered the question,”Maybe the infection not only goes through our veins, it also goes through our system like how marijuana shows up in a drug test, maybe it’ll show up”  I agreed with her,”She has a point, at first when this started, they just did physicals and it wasn’t always accurate, but with more survivors who are Doctors and Nurses, it can be more advanced and with the solar panels out there, evolution is coming back on its feet”
“Why are they even making us take these personality tests, skills tests and these papers if we’re just infected and going to die?” Cayden asked and Finley answered,”Maybe this is just in case, if we’re not infected, it’ll be ready, if we are, then at least they’ll know that what we were capable of”
