"Hi, did you need a bag for that one at all today?"

"No thank you."

"Did you have a membership card with us at all?"

"No."

"Would you like to sign up?"

"No."

"That's alright"

'Beep'

"Just $15 today, cash or card?" It was the same repetitive script every day.

"Uh, cash thanks," the customer handed over a 20-dollar bill. I opened the till and fished out a five, grabbing the receipt as I closed the till with my hip.

"Alright, and that's $5 change, have a lovely day," I smiled, handing the change over.

"You too," the customer muttered, walking out the door.

I finished the sale and turned back to the trolley of books I was putting away in the Young Adult section of the store. Letting out a sigh, I grabbed an armful of books and headed towards the shelves.
"Excuse me Sir?" a voice called behind me. I internalized a groan and put my books down.
"Hi, how can I help?" I asked, turning around, only to come face to face with a red-haired boy wearing a blue leather jacket. On the left-hand side was a sewn-on patch reading 'Dead Pegasus'. His eyeliner was smudged lightly and his mascara impeccable. Damn. I thought I was good with my eyeliner but it's like trying to compare myself to James Charles.

"Hi, I'm looking for a book," he said, his voice smooth like caramel.

"Well, you're in the right place," I chuckled, making him laugh too.

"You're funny, I like that," he responded suavely.

"What can I say, I've had a lot of practise. What kind of book are you looking for?" I questioned, fidgeting with my lanyard.

"I dunno, something good. Anything you'd recommend?" he asked, nonchalantly brushing his hair out of his face.
"You like fantasy?" I asked. The boy nodded.
"Read Cassandra Clare? Shadowhunters?" I asked, walking down towards it and grabbing City of Bones off the shelf.
"Nah, I haven't. Is it any good?"

"Any good? It's amazing. So basically, the motto of the series is, all the legends are true. She's 18, living in Brooklyn, she's lived her whole life as a Mundane, which is what they call normal people, until she bumps into a blonde guy who flips her entire world upside down. Everything we're told are imaginary, ya know, vampires, werewolves, warlocks are real. So her whole life has been twisted and now she's got to learn to be one of the people who hunt and kill demons. It's an amazing series. I'm more of a sci-fi person but my younger sister asked me to read it since there's an LGBT couple in it and I'm part of the community myself," I felt myself getting excited, the passion in my voice evident. With every word I spoke, I felt my smile getting bigger and bigger.

"I'll take it then!" the boy replied, a grin on his face.

"Alright! That's the first one in the series, there's five more as well, plus the side stories like the Bane Chronicles, the Shadowhunters codex and the Tales of the Shadowhunter Academy. She's also written another series called the Dark Artifices," I replied, indicating them.

"Alright, I'll take the first three and then come back to see you for the rest," He winked at me and I smiled in response.
"Cool!" I said, heading to the counter once again, the red-haired boy following me with the books in his hands.
"Alright, did you need a bag?" I asked, scanning the books in.
"Yeah, thanks," he nodded, and I quickly scanned a bag in too.

"Alright, and that brings your total to $56.20 today,"

"Uh, cash if that's alright," he said, fumbling to get his wallet out. He handed me a 50 and a 10 dollar note. I opened the till and went to get his change when a small piece of paper fell into the $20 slot. I grabbed his change, the note, a bag and the receipt as I turned back to him.

"That's $3.80 change. I hope you enjoy the books. When you're done, give us a call and go, "y/n! I need the rest of Shadowhunters!" and I'll put them aside for you," I said, putting the books into the bag carefully, dropping the receipt inside.

"Also uh, this fell into the till. Was it yours?" I asked, handing him the note.

"Nah, it's for you," he replied, walking away with a smirk.

"Have a wonderful day," I smiled.
"You too," he said and with a nod, he walked out the door.

I checked that no customers needed assistance and grabbed the piece of paper. Scrawled in slightly messy but very legible writing were the words,

"To the hot guy at the bookstore, I'm Gerard Way. I work downstairs in the ice-cream shop and I love coming in to get books. I've had a thing for you for a while but never had the courage to ask you out, or if you were even single. Call me? 1869475361."

It's not great, I'm sorry. I'm still getting back into the habit of writing again.
