Maria's Point of view
It was a week later, and Maria still has not found a job. She tried looking for a job, but she couldn't find one. She put in over hundred applications to different jobs, and they are all telling her that she is not eligible to get the job. Maria was in her own world when Amelia walked into the living room.
"Mommy, I really hungry," Amelia said as she sat beside her mother.
"I know, baby. I am trying my best. I am hungry too." Maria told her daughter.
"Mommy," Amelia hesitated.
"Yes, baby," Marie replied as she turned to she baby girl.
"Why can't we call daddy, so he can help us out?," Amelia asked as she looked down at her hands.
"Because your daddy do really bad thing to get the money that he have," Maria told her daughter.
Maria didn't want to tell Amelia that her dad is doing cocaine and selling it too. She did not want her only child to be around that mess. Caleb, Amelia dad, use to be a nice guy. He used to have a nice job as a Sheriff for the police department. One night there was a robbery at the grocery store. The robber had the clerk at gunpoint. Caleb tried to reason with the robber, but the robber even trying to listen to Caleb and the other policemen. When Caleb pulled the trigger on his gun, everything change. He drunk alcohol every day and night. When Amelia was just a few months old, Caleb tries to deny that Amelia was not his.
Maria had to let Caleb do a paternity test done on Amelia, even though she did not have any affair. When the test came back saying he was the father, his drinking got even worst. Later in their relationship, Caleb was abusing Maria. If anything be out of order, he would beat her with anything he can get his hands on. Maria walked in on him snorting cocaine, then one thing just led to another. Caleb quit his job and started to sell the drug on the streets. He has been in jail more than five-time for getting caught with drugs on him. When Amelia turned three, Maria had enough Caleb hitting on her, so she got a job and found a place for her and her daughter to live.
"Mommy, when can we see daddy?" Amelia asked her mother.
"I know know baby," Maria told her. She didn't want to tell Amelia never because she knows that Amelia will want to see her father one day.
Maria picks up her house phone and decided to call Mrs. Becky to see if she can help them get some food. The phone rang three times before Mrs. Becky picks up.
"Hello sweetie. How is it going?" Mrs. Becky asked Maria.
"It's not going well. I put in over a hundred application to different jobs, and they all saying that I'm not eligible to work for them." Maria replied.
"Poor thing! Everything will get better. Is there anything I can do?" Mrs. Becky asked.
"Yes, there is! Amelia and I have not eaten anything this past week. Can you feed us, please?" Maria pleaded.
"Sure sweetheart. I'm going to start come right now. Do I need to come and Picky' all up?" asked Mrs. Becky.
"No ma'am. We will ride the bus, " Maria told Mrs. Becky.
"Okay, baby. I will see you when y' all get here." Mrs. Becky responded.
"See you soon and thanks again!" Maria said.
"You're welcome child," Mrs. Becky told Maria then she hung up the phone.
"Amelia, sweetie, go put your shoes on. We are going to Mrs. Becky's house." Maria said.
"Okay mommy," Amelia replied.
On their way outside, Maria took her last five dollars, that she had, to buy bus tickets for her and Maria.
