We finally arrived at NCT's base, and the calmness that had finally overcome me suddenly left and I was panicking. My breathing was becoming more rapid and I could feel my heart beating in my throat. My grip on the gun in my right hand was tightening to the point my knuckles were turning white.
I felt something warm cover my hand so I looked down, only to find Hyunjin's hand on mine. I immediately relaxed under his touch. He smiled down at me and gave my hand a light squeeze before he opened the door and I followed him out.
Chan and the group from his car were standing outside of their car, so we joined them.
"Alright, now that everyone's here. We have 10 people, so I'm thinking we split into 5 teams of two?" Chan looked around at everyone, and when his eyes met mine, I wanted to cry again. But I didn't, I've cried enough lately. It's time for me to stop being a helpless crybaby.
While I was having an internal monologue, everyone had divided into groups and I noticed that Chan was with Woojin, so I turned to Hyunjin.
"Are we a team?"
"Yep. But we are not going inside. We'll be outside on perimeter watch. Hopefully this will keep you safe and you won't have any reason to fire your gun." Hyunjin gave me a lazy smile as he looked at me.
"Oh, okay." Well since I'm going to be on the outside, I'll see anyone who goes in or comes out since there is only the one entrance. Then I thought about Mina. I really hope she didn't do anything stupid.
My thoughts were cut off by multiple gunshots sounding from inside the building followed by male voices yelling.
"We gotta get in there, you guys know what to do. Let's go!" Chan shouted his commands and everyone except Hyunjin and I followed them inside.
We hid ourselves behind a bush so that we had a clear view of the door, but also so we were out of sight in case someone came along.
"Hyunjin?" I was looking down at the weapon in my hands while thinking.
"Hmm?"
"Have you ever killed anyone? I know Chan said you guys are a good gang, but even the good guys kill people sometimes."
He let out a deep sigh as he looked at me. "Once." He broke our eye contact. "It was 2 years ago, I was still just a kid. Chan had just started the gang, and we were on a mission to protect a family from a gang called EXO. everything was going fine until I noticed one of their members sneaking up behind Chan. He was too close and by the time I would've said something, Chan would've been stabbed. So, I took the gun I had for defensive purposes and shot the guy. I didn't even aim, yet I hit him straight in the heart. I'm still shaken today by the fact that I took someone's life. But I'm learning how to deal with it. The guilt that is. I still get nightmares, but I learned how to calm down from them."
He looked up at me once he was finished talking. There was a brief moment of silence before I spoke up.
"I don't ever want to kill somebody. I mean, sure I wanted Jaemin dead after why he did to us, and Nuri. But I could never kill him." Tears we're gathering in my eyes as I thought about how it would feel to tae
Hyunjin took my hand in his and brought it to his mouth as he kissed it gently. "I hope you never have to either princess."
I gave him a small smile, but we were both startled when we heard the door open and multiple people running. He signaled me to stay down as he went to investigate.
I saw him make his way to the right so I followed him with my gaze. But I saw something out of the corner of my left eye that made me turn my head. Sneaking up behind Hyunjin was someone with a gun. I wanted to tell out for Hyunjin to turn around, but no sound escaped my mouth when I opened it.
I looked down at the gun in my hands and debated using it. I've never been trained on how to shoot, I couldn't possibly hit the person. And when I miss them, at least the sound will scare everyone. Alright, Rae. You've got this.
With shaky hands, I pointed the gun in the general direction of the person sneaking up on Hyunjin. While I held it in my right hand, I used my left to turn off the safety.
I breathed in deeply once, then closed my eyes and pulled the trigger.
A loud BOOM echoed around and once I opened my eyes, I saw the person I had aimed at on the ground and not moving.
I dropped the gun and ran over to them and I saw Hyunjin running towards me. As I reached the person, I turned him over and gasped when I saw that it was Jaemin. He wasn't moving.
I checked for his pulse and even listened for his breathing as panic started to set in. My hands were shaking as I searched for the bullet hole so I could apply pressure.
When I found the wound, I stopped breathing.
It was right over his heart. My hands were shaking and I didn't know what to do. Tears started to pool in my eyes and my vision became too blurry to see anything.
I felt someone pulling me away from his body and into theirs. I didn't have to look to know it was Hyunjin.
Soon, more bodies surrounded us and I saw blurry figures bend down to Jaemin's limp body and carry him away. Hyunjin kept me in his arms and rocked me until I calmed down a bit.
"Hyunjin I-I didn't mean to k-kill-" I couldn't finish my sentence due to the sobs escaping my mouth.
"Shh. I know, princess." Hyunjin was holding my head to his chest as he gently stroked my hair. We stayed like that for a few minutes until a new voice spoke up.
"Rae." Chan's voice was full of worry and he spoke so softly that I almost didn't hear him. I looked up to see him and tried to stand, but I stumbled. Hyunjin and Chan both helped me to stand and Chan pulled me into his arms.
"I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry!" Why was he apologizing? I'm the one who just killed a person. His apology brought the tears back, and I sobbed as he held me closer to him.
He kept apologizing as he held me close, and I felt my breaths becoming shallow. My legs went numb and my vision went black.
